Latest Wizards Cover Botch

one of the spelljammer novels was something or other with Maelstrom in the title.

and also for D&D... M1 Into the Maelstrom

Not sure I see the relevance. Having the same name as (or a similar name to) an old product has, if anything, been a point in a title's favour since 3E came out.

I've never encountered anyone in America who didn't know the word "maelstrom."

Obviously, you have not met many 3 year olds.

I'm a bit disappointed by the title change, but not terribly. One of the things that I find to be incredibly fascinating about D&D is the new vocabulary that it introduces; not just the jargon of the game (ie. Dungeon Master), but the advancement in general terms. Spells, weapons, and book titles give context to vocabulary that many newcomers to the game have never seen. Maelstrom would have been a nice title, though from what I've learned about "wrack," Wizards hasn't really "dumbed down" anything. More people seemed to have to research that particular term than did the first.

Shipwrack also falls into the rhythmic pattern of the other environmental books, so nothing broken there. They opted out of Maelstrom. They chose something else. It still gets the point across, and in my opinion is still intellectually stimulating without alienating the younger target audience.

It almost seems that any name WotC gives books will be complained over. They should just name their books after Simpsons' characters and be done with it ... and let everyone know ahead of time, just to circumvent the conspiracy theories of 'dumbing down' and such.

Disclaimer: I thought I should put one, as I've had about as many beers as there are words in this post. Not including this discalimer. So, here it is: this post is intentionally lighthearted. Those who are willing to accept its joviality in stride will not be bothered; the rest will be taunted and d until my throught is hoarse.:D

You have the best spelling of any 44 beer drinking guy i have ever known.
