I'm looking at modifying the Leadership feat to add flexibility to the types of followers that are allowed, but still keep things balanced.
My proposal is to allow players to choose any classes and races (including races with ECL modifiers) rather than strictly limiting the choices to NPC classes mentioned in the DMG (warrior, expert, and commoner, DMG page 46).
To keep this balanced, I'm thinking that you must end up with the same CR as you started; for example a character with a leadership score of 13 has 10 1st level followers and 1 second level follower. The player could choose 5 1st level fighters and a 2nd level expert, or 6 1st level fighters for example.
2 1st level NPC classes = 1 1st level PC class
1 2nd level NPC class = 1 1st level PC class
1 3rd level NPC class = 1 2nd level PC class
...
1 6th level NPC class = 1 5th level PC class (or a 2nd level PC class with an ECL+3 race such as half-dragon)
I just don't want every character with the same leadership score to have a "cookie-cutter" approach to followers - I think the followers should be based on the type of character leading them and the region that the followers are being drawn from.
Does this seem balanced/fair?
