Leadership Feat - Calculating XP for Cohorts

I'm a bit confused on this one, and would really like to hear some opinions and rules interpretations on this one. If I'm reading this correctly, the SRD basically says to figure XP for the party as if the Cohort didn't exist. Then, to figure the Cohorts XP, divide Cohort's level by the leading PC's level, and multiply the result by the leading PC's XP award. Does that sound right?

Here are a couple of examples:

Example 1)
The party: One 6th level PC with a 5th level Cohort. They defeat one CR 6 beastie.
XP award for the PC: 1,800
XP award for the cohort: 1,500 (5/6 * 1800)
Correct?

Example 2)
The party: Four PC's, all 6th level, one with a 4th level Cohort. They defeat a CR 10 beastie. The PC's split 7,200 XP four ways.
XP award for each PC: 1,800
XP award for the cohort: 1,200 (4/6 * 1,800)
Correct?

This is exactly what is stated in the DMG, so yes it is right.

One flaw with your examples. A 6th level PC can't have a 5th level cohort, because a cohort has to be at least two levels behind the PC. Aside from that, yes, your math looks right.

Perhaps he's secretly talking about thralls.

In a campaign I'm in the DM doesn't worry about Xp for my cohort - he is always 2 levels below my character, so if I level then my cohort levels. Much simpler. :D

That's what I do. Unless the Cohort has craft magical item feats and needs XP for spending, I never worry how much they have.

Yep, that's what I do also -- "Cohort" is a feature of a Feat, and the Cohort you get is exactly the level that you qualify for. At higher PC levels, it's possible that your Cohort will fall behind. On the other hand, if your Charisma goes up when you level, it's possible that your Cohort will gain *two* levels when you gain one.

Simple.

Oh, and all XP spent by the Cohort at the PC's command come from the PC. If the Cohort acts on his own (DM overrides PC), the XP come from ... somewhere else. *waves hand*
