Leadership Feat vs. "Minions" vs. "Sidekick"

I'm working on something right now and found two feats that are similar to the Leadership Feat (3.0 version). The two feats are from Dungeon #90.

One is called "Minions". It's basically the "Leadership" feat but strips away the Cohort and just gives followers. However, the Pre-Reqs are the same (character level 6+) and the # of followers/minions is unchanged from the regular Leadership feat. So, basically, it's exactly the same with no cohort.

The "Sidekick" feat is exactly the same as Leadership but strips out the followers. You just get the cohort. The cohort's level progression is exactly the same as the cohort from Leadership.

So, this is where I'm confused. Why would someone take either "Minions" or "Sidekick" when they could just take "Leadership" and get both abilities? What am I missing.

I'm working on writing up some custom feats with similar statistics but I'm afraid I'm not understanding the balance of these three compared to each other.

It was part of the "Pulp Adventures" game in Polyhedron. Maybe that game doesn't have the leadership feat, so your only choice is to take either "Minions" or "Sidekick"?

It's based on D20 Modern, which I don't own. Is there a D20 Modern equivalent of "Leadership"?

Well, you could always let the Minions feat give you twice as many followers of each level as an equivalent-score Leadership (and let 'em stack!), and let the Sidekick be slightly higher-level than a cohort (+2 or so to leadership score for that), with another slight bonus if you get leadership (another +2 or so).
