Leather jackets deflect bullets?!?

People seriously overestimate the impact of firearms against armor, too.

A leather jacket will provide some defense against being shot. Leather armor would provide more.

And yes, a full suit of platemail would provide a considerable bonus to your Defense against ballistic attacks. Not every shot, but a lot of the shots will quite simply deflect off of your armor. This is enough to warrant the platemail's armor bonus to your Defense, just as it does against longswords.

And of course, while D20M specifically stats Leather Jackets, many riding jackets nowadays are made from Kevlar or other modern protective materials.

I second that. Abstract ramblings are fine, but they shouldn't be taken too seriously. I might enjoy this, but no one should forget that the essential point is this: X armor provides Y bonus. This spell has that effect. The rules are the rules. They work. Why mess with them when they work? Realism isn't exactly integtral to the concept of 'game', anyway. It works. The system is balanced against itself, and to some degree, against the rules of logic. I'm happy. I just like abstract theorizing on the subject, and am prone to long-winded posts on ideas like this. Sorry if I offend.

Amen to that.

I tend to house-rule/change things that hurt the system itself (like non-lethal damage), but things like that, I let go.

Why ?

Because I stick to D&D/D20 fot it's simplicity and ease of play.
