Leaving The Forgotten Realms for Greyhawk. Any suggestions?

I still have the huge four-part Greyhawk map that came in Dungeon several years back. I'll finally have a use for it when I start ToEE.

Don't get me wrong Janaxtrus, I love FR. But the reasons you stated are the exact reasons i want to go to something new. In my research I've learned that there isn't a published dungeon of Castle Greyhawk like Gary's. Are there any close to it though? Or would it be better to create my own? I'm very interested in a megadungeon that has options for all characters of all levels? Are there any good older ones besides Undermountain. Doesn't necessarily have to be set in Greyhawk.

Check out Greyhawk Ruins and Expedition to Castle Greyhawk. The first is a 2nd Edition adventure modules the second is a 3rd Edition adventure module - both are set in and around the castle. Also, look for Castle Zagyg for the Castles & Crusades system. It was done by Gary just before he died.

Probably the greatest Greyhawk setting adventure of all time is the Age of Worms. It was published in Dungeon magazine and you can still buy the PDF's of those issues from Paizo on their website. It spans an entire campaign from level 1 to level 20 and beyond. I personally DM'ed this campaign and it lasted 2 and a half years and ended with the PC's level 22. At the very end the players were cheering and dancing in my driveway outside :)

The adventures include the city of Greyhawk, Tomb of Horrors, and iconic NPC's like Mordenkainen, Tenser (under an alias) and more. The adventure path has plenty of blank spaces for you to put in some ideas of your own, I also ran some other iconic Greyhawk adventures in there like the updated Castle Maure (a Dungeon magazine updated version of the old Mordenkainen's Fantastic Adventure module).

Check it out. For me it was the campaign of my lifetime. In over 30 years of gaming I never had DM'ed PC's from level 1 to 20 before and it was a total blast.

I've been running a party through Rappan Athuk. It's kind of deadly, but a lot of cool stuff in it. It's a setting neutral Sword and Sorcery module.

Greyhawk was always my favorite of the D&D published worlds, but you gotta realize that it's a lot more of a 'do it yourself' world than FR (personally, that why it always appealed to me). The info about people and places is a lot sparser. I preferred the older pre-Wars boxed set, but that stuff is really hard to find now...

As I said that is the main reason I want to go to GH so much. The availability seems like it will be the hardest part of switching.

Thanks y'all. I have an idea of what i want. Probably go with the box sets and a few books if I can find them.

If there's anything specific you're looking for, I may have a spare that I'm willing to sell: I've been combing through my Greyhawk and AD&D/OD&D collections and getting them organized. And I definitely have a number of extras. Email me if you've got some specific wants: grodog@gmail.com.

There's quite a bit of information available about Castle Greyhawk, but not in any cohesive, single source. I've tried to compile a lot of the lore on my page @ grodog's Greyhawk Castle Archive and in a recent thread on DF @ Dragonsfoot • View topic - Inventory of levels/sublevels in EGG/RJK's Castle Greyhawk And Joe Bloch @ Greyhawk Grognard has quite a bit of info in his Greyhawk Lore Project and some in his Castle of the Mad Archmage (which Black Blade is publishing).

My (long) review of Castle Zagyg also digs into mega-dungeons in general, and might be useful for you.

Living Greyhawk Gazetteer - A 192 page overview of Greyhawk (great for DM's), with the same poster map of the Flaneass, and the continents and oceans of Oerth (just with a different border and a bit bigger). It was printed for those playing in the Living Greyhawk RPGA games, but it's really just an incredibly thorough Campaign Setting book. It was just printed to be the "official" setting for Living Greyhawk.
That book really is the place to start, before the boxed sets or anything. Closest thing Greyhawk is likely to see to a full campaign setting treatment (at least until 5E maybe?), and the most dense collection of setting info on Greyhawk as a whole in print.
