LEB Discussion Thread '09

Ok, now I have a couple logistical questions.

Can the utility power "Pass Forward" be used while mounted? If not I'll have to choose something else.

Can "stance" ultility powers be used while mounted? Some issues with stances came up in 3.5 with Bo9S, so I figured I would try to get it out of the way here too

My understanding would be yes, although I'm not sure if the utility would protect the mount from getting OA'd. As for the stances, I'm thinking yes (as the design philosophy of 4e seems to be not to preclude things, like being able to push a gelatenous cube with your shield ;)), but the mount won't benefit from them (as they're your stance)

Actually, all but the Dragonhawk are likely "drakes" than "behemoths" (being the smaller dinos); the Dragonhawk is a large eagle like-critter from Aundair.

And, uk, for getting the ECG first! Guess its karma for me getting the EPG four days early.

Hahahaha Karma strikes again! (As I say this I watch all chance of a timely purchase of every other hardcover for the next 6 months disappear) If it makes you feel any better I got Divine Power and the EPG at the exact same time?

Also I am totally rocking out the mounts with my LEB character. I've never really used mounts in any edition before so I'm intrigued to try! I can't wait to get the clawfoot! His ability is sweet!

I probably won't be getting the ECG for several days, so I'll just have to make use of the warhorse for a bit. If I get the book before a game starts I might switch to something with more of an Eberron feel. In 3.5 the clawfoot was a medium mount for small characters and the carver was the large one for medium sized characters. Obviously thats changed.

Yeah I'm thinking a riding lizard is good, but I'm hoping to have a more Eberron'y feel. Are there scorpions in it? I'd love to have one of them for the drow in me.

I just picked up the ECG... no, no scorpions, sorry. There are a couple of flying ones.

I'm pretty tempted by the mounts... but they seem to have some potential drawbacks.

1. Investment of gold... they can cost as much as a magic item of the same level. Unlike a magic item, though, they can be killed. If this happens, are you just out the gold, tough luck? That seems pretty harsh.

2. Not always useful... also related to investment. In indoor/dungeon environments they take a penalty (if they can come along at all). Would you buy a magic item you have to leave behind every other adventure?

3. Scaling... when you get to higher levels, will there suitable higher level mounts available? Can you just buy a griffin (or whatever) as you would a magic item? (Not as big a concern in PbP where you'll probably never get to that high of a level... plus I guess you can always retrain Mounted Combat.)

I have no particular solutions. I'm wondering if anyone else does, or can point out mitigating factors.

census

On another subject... I like the census in the Inquisitive, good work renau1g! Useful info.

I really want to play a striker... halfling barbarian or maybe half-orc rogue inquisitive. But the census will make me feel guilty if I don't make a controller or defender. :)

A suggestion: if possible, it would be interesting to include dragonmarks in the census!

There are mounts of higher level available (in the Epic game I'm about to play here, I picked up a Nightmare and another player grabbed a wyvern).

The main benefit of the mount is their (usually) increased movement speed/types (climb, flying, etc) as you can't take a full round of actions for them anyways. Knowing that they are a bit iffy in some adventures, I'd expect the DM to be forthcoming about the environs he expects if a player has a lot of resources sunk in one (Vertexx for example might not want to play in a strictly dungeon crawl adventure)

I'd think you might be able to resurrect them by paying the gold cost, but not sure.
