Legendary Classes: better in theory than practise?

I'm wondering whether any of you have played or allowed Legendary Classes in your campaign. Considering the quests the player needs to undertake, I think it might be highly disruptive for a campaign. Sure they're cool and all, but this looks like a case of theory over practise.

Your thoughts and experiences?

I haven't used them since I haven't been running a game, and neither of the games I'm in are near that level. However, I think they can work great in practice. Most of the quest can be done with a party, even if there is something that only the person taking the class can eventually do. Or they can be easily be fit into down time, it really depends on how important to the whole campaign it is.

I haven't used one yet but while writing two for FFG's LgC competition I spent sometime pondering the 'in game' mechanics of them...

there is the possibility for disruption to a game/campaign by someone wishing to take on an LgC... but it's only truly a distraction if the DM allows the quests for that character to become the focus for the game rather than something that happens externally to whatever story/plot he/she may be using...

as Crothian pointed out many of the Quests for LgC's can be done in with a party (or possibly with them present but not assisting) so there should be little, to no, disruption to a party-based game...

as with a great many things in gaming these days, I think it's probably going to work on a case by case basis... some DMs will seemlessly incorporate a PC's quest to become "El Supremo" into their long running campaign while others may struggle to keep the game on track...

parts of the LgC's could be great vehicles for some amazing roleplaying and should probably be tried before making too many judgements, I guess...

if you try them, please tell me how they work out...

:)

I've played around with a couple of them for some NPC's that characters have had a chance to encounter in a game I run. They work OK, but I think that they are best when modified somewhat to work as epic level prestige classes.
