Legendary Encounters - Reaper

In a perfect example of capitalism at work, Reaper is now selling a line of pre-painted miniatures - Legendary Encounters - meeting a demand for non-random, pre-painted miniatures.

I'm thrilled to see this for several reasons
  • I really like minis
  • I can't paint (no skills :D)
  • I hate WotC's random "booster pack" model
  • I now control what monsters I purchase

I went to my FLGS on Monday and picked up some orcs and some skeletons.

IMHO you are better off buying D&D singles. You can get most common minis from $0.20 and up. Just stay away from the ultra rare minis.

I have made my whole D&D mini set for rpging ( about 150+ minis ) with less than $70.00

check ebay and single mini salesmen: Alterealitygames.com and maybe Miniaturemarket.com

Nice to see they are getting something out besides goblins and undead.

I prefer metal minis for my PCs. Individual flavor FTW, but for NPCs and monsters pre-painted plastic rocks. This line has been kind of slow to expand, but hopefully it is picking up.

Problem being, the commons have the worst paint jobs and are generally pretty 'blah'. The better looking Uncommons are coperably priced to Reaper. While the Rares are usually rediculously over-priced.

Last year I picked up two LE ogres for $5 each. Unpainted version would have been twice that much and then I would need to paint them. The DDM version - well I'd have to find it in stock and pay whatever my FLGS decided to charge for it.

So when the situation is right, the LE minis are a great time and money saver!

Elder Red Dragon from the most recent expansion is selling for $30 on Alterealitygames.com, but I've seen it as high as $45.

$30 is not bad considering the Black Dragon that WotC sells for 29.99.

They've been out for awhile. The LE minis that are available as commons in DDM are a really bad deal, unless you are totally averse from using the secondary market. The quality is less than many DDM commons, and the price is waaaaaaay higher than the secondary market. They might work for some of the ones that are DDM rares, though.

If you don't like the secondary market (or are a kid/person w/o access to online money), then they might make sense. But, if you go to Auggies, the WotC boards, Hordelings, or Maxminis, you can find much, much, much better deals on line.

edit: for example, I just sold 188 minis, plus 3 map packs and 18 old skewl tiles for $280. That kind of price cannot be beat by any primary market model (that pretty much was my complete stack of definitely disposable R/U/C).
