Legendary Persons and Places in the World of Greyhawk

Or better yet!

Cobble together your own story or theory behind a Greyhawk signature NPC and post it in the Whereabouts forum! Im trying to get some alternate Greyhawk discussion going there people!

Since the main purpose of this thread was giving the IR participants a little more background information on the setting, and Edena has already taken a few liberties with the setting, why bother clamoring for canon descriptions now?

To be totally honest, part of my reason for bringing my Alternate Greyhawk material to ENBoards was being completely fed up with the endless, and futile, quest among established Greyhawk circles to find one sole and true answer for everything. Greyhawk lists are not friendly (in general) to homebrew or "heretical" material. A general D&D forum like ENWorld is (for the most part, as always, there are exceptions on both sides of the little fence I'm building here) open to more creative and freewheeling interpretation of the setting.

I would love to see what the rest of yall think about some of the NPCs that have been mentioned in this thread. I'm currently working on a backstory for Slerotin, that I hope to get posted by this weekend at the latest (it involved delving into my campaign notes and trying to put info that is heavily rooted in my game, and second nature to my players, into a context that those of you who don't understand my deviant DM ways can use.

Thanks everyone for the information.

Corndog, I will try to get over to the Whereabouts forum. I do agree what you said about making your own story. So does Col_Plahdoh, the esteemed Gary Gygax, who said that Oerth that is real is the one you play in.

(A fun trick to pull on your players in a GH or any other campaign is to take them to an alternate version of the world they know.)

I would like you or anyone else on these boards to join us for the IR thread in the In Character Forum. I will put my own thoughts about the Isles of Woe in the Whereabouts forum.

One thing that I love about the EN Boards is that there is a tremendous amount of knowledge and creativity among its members. Again, thanks for the information.

Re: Kas and Vecna

Is there any history of Kas and Vecna out there, explaining how Vecna came to power or why Kas betrayed him?

I think there's some of that in "Vecna Reborn."

The reason I think it's there is that I've read a brief synopsis of the Kas / Vecna relationship, and that's the only "Vecna product" I have. And I can't find my copy of the module to check.

Re: Re: Kas and Vecna

OK, still can't find my copy of "Vecna Reborn" but in "Vecna Lives" (got the ESD the other day), there is a brief history of Vecna and Kas.

Kas, as Vecna's most trusted lieutenant, was gifted with a magical sword made by Vecna himself. The sword ("evil, even when compared with its creator") slowly seduced Kas into betraying Vecna.

When Kas struck, Vecna's tower crumbled into dust. No trace of Kas was found; just his sword. All that remained of Vecna were his lifeless hand and eye.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Barendd.

I thought this was the case, but I did not know if anything was added to the story.

Check out the IR thread in the In Character forum. The Isles of Woe will be up and running on February 20th.

Does anyone have knowledge about lands beyond the Flanaess?

I know there was an article in an early Dragon that Gygax considers apocryphal (to put it politely)? Also, can anyone tell me about the lands in the Chainmail setting?

William - Check out Greytalk archives for a post by Steve Miller of a list of mysterious places that was supposed to appear in the Living Greyhawk Gaztteer. That might give you a few ideas for a game.

IIRC there were a few in Living Greyhawk Journal #1.

I'm not sure of the article to which you are referring - I do know that in a Dragon Magazine Annual, there was a map of greyhawk printed that it was asserted was from Gary and Rob's early Greyhawk Campaign - Gary has stated that the map did NOT come from the original GH campaign.

The Sundered Empire (from Chainmail) lies far to the west of the Flanaess - in fact, there is a whole other continent (undeveloped) that lies between The Sundered Empire and the Flanaess. Erik Mona in a recent thread remarked that he was willing to give (more or less) Carte Blanche to Gary in shaping out the continent in the middle (just to the west of the Flanaess), but Gary has too many prior commitments to accept such a project.

I hope this healped clear things up a little bit.
