Legions of Hell - Anyone using it?

I just thought I'd resurrect this thread.

Last night, I had the opportunity to use a Pain Mistress from Legions of Hell. I would say that she worked quite well, and her CR is probably pretty accurate. First, a little background:

The PC's are currently in a camp of revolutionaries about 2 days outside of a city. They are honorary members of the revolutionary league, and they have been travelling with the crown prince and the mastermind behind the revolution, a woman named Naivoryn. Unknown to them, Naivoryn is an erinyes. Naivoryn has her own sinister reasons for starting the revolution. For reasons that are too involved to mention here, an organization of devils (and demons, there's no Blood War in my campaign) desperately wants to stop Naivoryn from accomplishing her "secret" mission, so they have dispatched spies and assassins.

At any rate, the PC's and Naivoryn recently fled the city under circumstances that caught the attention of this group of devils, so the devils dispatched a group to try to track Naivory down and kill her. The group consisted of a Pain Mistress (for tracking and killing), an Osyluth (for Dimensional Anchor, and to isolate Naivoryn), and a Black Abishai (for more killing power). Using illusion and polymorph, the group appeared as a ragged band of peasants who had a message they desperately needed to give to Naivoryn herself. The Pain Mistress tracked the party to the camp, and the group approached. The camp was wary and knew of the "peasants'" approach, so the captain had ordered all of guards to be present (about 30). When Naivoryn identified herself, the group made their attack, starting with a Dimensional Anchor from the Osyluth (successful).

The combat went pretty well. The Pain Mistress's Symbol of Pain did wonders against the mass of guards, as well as the PC's, though a later Dispel by the party cleric was surprisingly effective. I had the Pain Mistress use her grappling claws, as she wanted to grab hold of Naivoryn and crush the life out of her. Unfortunately, she never got a chance. When the erinyes turned invisible (a reasonable response), I realized with horror that the devils had no way of detecting her! The Pain Mistress had to satisfy herself with killing guards while the Osyluth blindly used walls of ice to try to keep Naivoryn in a contained area.

Overall, the Pain Mistress was quite effective. Her lack of DR and SR, which is unusual for a devil of her power, was her undoing, as stray crossbow bolts from the few remaining guards (those that hadn't fled) did damage, and every spell sent her way was effective (mostly magic missiles). Her Domination ability was quite nice, as it allowed her to turn the party's most powerful fighter to her side. Her grappling claws were also quite effective, and she managed to kill 3 guards and a PC's cohort before she was brought down. In the end, though, her weaknesses and lack of Teleport ability spelled her doom, and she was cut down. The Osyluth (Teleport) and Abishai (flight, regeneration) both managed to escape.

In summary, the Pain Mistress is an excellent tool of evil. Wilderness Lore combined with a Polymorph Self ability allows her to track quarry and infiltrate if necessary. Once her quarry has been located, the Symbol of Pain and Domination make it difficult to effectively combat her, and the Pain Mistress's grappling claws are effective in grabbing a single opponent and making sure he gets dead.

Funny coicidence, that. I just sat down at my computer with the very task you describe in mind. I was hoping PCgen supports making such a character (Alas, I see that they have Jade Dragons and Hungry ghosts done, but not legions of hell... aargh!)

Psion,
Thanks for your interest in PCGen. I just saw this post on the front of this thread and sent a message to the group asking if anyone is working on porting it to pcgen. I will wait for a response back from them to see if we have anyone that purchased it. Some of the problems that arise from these products that put out are:

1. Too many of them
2. Not enough of us
3. Not enough $$$ to buy them all to code.

The massive amount of products out there pull us in all directions in trying to code in the massive amount of data that PCGen requires to do a full setting: FR, GH, KoK, etc. Usually a suppliment is very easily inputted depending on who is doing it. We have people who are very good at inputting feats and others who can breeze through the classes, etc. Overall it takes about 1 solid week if working another job (which 90% of us do) to input a module's items, PrC's and feats. Full blown conversions such as SpyCraft which is the project I have a team of 4 on have taken us about 3 weeks to complete and we are almost done. Of course since we don't have an unlimited supply of cash we rely allot on the generosity and understanding of publishes to supply us with material to input. A few of the gracious publishers: AEG, Battlefield Press, Living Arcanis have given us electronic copies of their material for us to work off making our job many times easier. If we had that kind of support from more publishers we would have that material coded in that much faster. We don't need every page sent to us just the pertinent info: Race, Class, Skills, Feats, Spells, equipment, etc. Everythign that would take to build a PC and nothing more.

If anyone has any questions on PCGen or how we operate feel free to visit our yahoogroup here:

All questions, comments, and concerns are welcome and can be sent my way and I will answer them as they come in.

Thanks for the support!

Actually I am on the list, and obviously I have it. But my review schedule and other things keep me from becoming a code-monkey. :(

Still think PCgen is great. I am still a little new to the syntax, but have done enough that I hav put bits of a few supplements and house rules in.

I love Legions of Hell, and use it extensively.

The Chamagons are a perennial favorite:)

Chamagons look very cool. Just one question, though. If they are under a continual Anti-magic field, how does Baal teleport them into the midst of an enemy?

I do think they can turn it off if they wish. Besides I'm sure Baal could probably just summon a sphere of annihilation if they don't comply...

I thought about that too. If they can turn it on and off, it seems like it would be very powerful.

The idea is that Baal can do it because he's one of the Lords of the Nine and has special abilities. That wasn't real clear in the text though and has caused some confusion. When I said Baal teleporting, I literally meant him, not any of his flunkies.

Cool, that makes perfect sense to me now. Thanks!
