One sort of mini I find you can never have too many of is mundane-looking human infantry. Unfortunately historical medieval minis are generally too small, unpainted, and need assembly.
Some time back I got 8 "Caravan Guard" minis, which are mostly silvery in colour, and they're ok for some purposes, but I really needed some evil-looking guards/soldiers for the PCs to fight. I long sought some generic-looking "evil soldier" prepainted plastic minis, in vain. Until...
Today in the post arrived my 10 Harmonium Guard minis (3e Planescape). I unwrapped them, took my baby toenail clippers, clipped off all the silly spiky bits on their helmets and shoulder guards... et voila! Ten generic, mean-looking armoured guys with sword and shield, ready for a hundred different uses in dozens of games over the next few decades!
I did leave the smaller set of horns on one figure though, so I could denote him as a leader.
