WOIN Let's Build Treasure Planet

I've created a similar thread in other places. I wish to pose a question.

Tell me how you would build a game that mostly replicates the film "Treasure Planet."

If you haven't seen it, then it's a retelling of Robert Louis Stevens' Treasure Island. However, the ships fly from planet to planet. Solar sails collect energy, which powers the thrusters, ship mounted laser cannons, and artificial gravity on the ship. Characters carry laser blaster pistols and laser rifles. Long John Silver is a cyborg, with a multi-function arm and leg, as well as cyber-eye. There are robots, and even the ability to create portals to skip across vast areas of space. There is no need to worry about air, and everyone seems to be comfortable without any undue concern for temperature. Otherwise, it's Age of Sail, but with some sci fi and space mixed in.

I've looked at the ship construction rules, and really thought about reskinning, adapting it to age of sail ships, but I haven't done much more than think about that. The old RP nerd in me also wants to drastically increase the amount of cybertech available, but I know it will be the least used of all the options, so whats in the core is probably fine.

I want to take it a bit further, though, and add in magic. Spellcasting is fine, but if there are other options folks have worked out...

I have the three core books, plus a couple of pdf's from Eons. How would you do it?

Thanks in advance, I wait to see what you come up with.

Hmm. At first glance I think everything you need is already in there? The ship construction manual has solar sails, and the laser pistols and cyborgs are all core stuff. Was there anything in particular you were struggling with?

No particular struggles. We built characters last week. I was just wanting to pick the brains of the community, learn any tricks or tips they might have.

I've also been asking this question on other forums, to see how other systems would be used for the same ideas. I've just not been seeing many WOIN topics get much talk here, and I'm feeling a little left out. =)

WOIN should be a good fit for your concept as you can mix NEW (for space stuff, cyborgs, laser weapons) + OLD (for magic) to get all the elements you'd want. If you want more human heritage options in addition to the alien heritages on offer in NEW, the NOW book offers rules for mutants and augmented (bionics/cyborgs) heritage humans.

BTW, the WOIN Discord [Join the EN World / EN Publishing TTRPGs Discord Server!] seems to be a bit more active than this ENWorld WOIN forum these days, which is sad because this forum is way easier for searching previously discussed questions and keeping threads/topics separate. Good luck with "Treasure Planet"!

Thanks for the heads up. I occasionally scroll through my server list on Discord, but as you say, forums are so much easier to track conversations than an endless string of people posting whatever in the same place. Still, 'tis the way of the world, it seems.
