let's talk E3: gameboy DS, Sony PSP, Link grows up!

I guess the question for the handhelds comes down to if people are willing to pay the extra money for a more powerful unit, since the PSP is much more powerful than the GB. From what I understand their ace in the hole is that it is supposed to be easy to port games from the PS2 to it. So the potential of the unit is far greater. But then again, that really may not make a difference for the kind of games that will play well on a handheld unit. It should be interesting to watch what happens. If nothing else it should drive down the prices on the GB-SPs, there are a couple of games like Advance Wars (Ah, Military Madness/Nectaris lives) that I've been hankering to play.

Oh wow. Some good-looking games this year! I'm especially impressed by Metroid 2, the new Zelda game, and Battlefield 2. Starcraft Ghost and World of Warcraft both look impressive as hell, but I wouldn't expect anything less from Blizzard.

The Gameboy DS looks interesting as well. Time will tell if this thing is a hit or the next Virtual Boy. Luckily, the Gameboy DS will be backward-compatable with previous Gameboy and Gameboy Advance games, so that should definately help it out.

No ones even mentioned the best news so far, a sequel to Prince of Persia!

Other games that have my interest I just found out about are Ape Escape and Metal Gear Acid, both for the PSP. Looks like Sony is trying to suck me in despite my resistance.

Yes, it was. In fact it may have been a little more powerful, the cartridges held it back in quite a few ways.

It was. The problem was that, in the technical sense, it was harder to make games for based on the cartridge format. I don't know the actual details, since I know zilch about programming, but for the N64, the third-party people were having to go quite an extra distance beyond what they had to do for disc-based games. This was the single most disastrous instance for Nintendo, since it kept them stumbling while Sony pulled ahead (though curiously, Sega fell behind, and IIRC they were the first out the door on CD-games).

I'm having some trouble getting info about what happened at E3, but from what I've read at IGN and what I've heard here, here's what I think about the DS/PSP debate:

From what I've seen so far, it seems like the DS is seriously going to beat out the PSP. While the latter may have (still not 100% sure, haven't seen a PSP vs. DS breakdown) more actual power, past instances have shown that the strongest system doesn't always win (such as how the b&w GB kept crushing the color GameGear). What most people will probably focus on are A) The DS will be available first, in late 2004, while the PSP won't be available until early 2005. Having a several month lead, especially for the Yuletide season, is very important. B) The DS costs half of what the PSP will. That will be a serious deciding factor, all the more so since the cheaper system will be out first.

I'm so glad I have both an X-Box and a Cube.

Halo 2, Zelda, Splinter Cell 3, Prince of Persia 2, Full Spectrum Warrior, Doom 3, Half-Life 2, Metroid Prime 2....

The DS looks great too. Makes me glad I held off on getting a Gameboy.

Rumor has it that the PSP's battery life for games will only be around 4 hours while the DS's will be around 8 hours. Not sure if that's true or not though.

Sega botched the Saturn in just about every conceivable way. The biggest of which however was making it a the best sprite based system it could and only tacking on the polygon capabilities after finding out what Sony was doing, the way they did it also made the system extremely difficult to program for.

10 hours for the DS, based on what I recall from the Gamespot article. If you want to check out what they have go to the site and on the right side in the list of systems the DS and PSP both have their own links already.
