Level 4 Cleric assistance?

What skills/feats/abilities should a level 4 cleric, who is our primary healer, be focused on. He seems to get beat up a lot, and that's not good since we rely on him so much.

. . .and what are his race/stats/build choices, and since it appears you are not the player of said cleric, is he going to appreciate your meddling?

For reference, this kind of thing has been discussed in the Main forum. Look for the long thread about telling someone their player sucks.

Str clerics want a good weapon (superior weapon prof), possibly a heavy shield or heavier armor. The armor will require some Con (13 at 1st is fine) and isn't really required. There's a good argument for both Cha or Wis (or, ugh, both) as a secondary score, and each has benefits and drawbacks.

Wis clerics doesn't really need anything specifically to function. They have a very strong leaning toward Cha as their secondary stat, which will hurt your non AC defenses a bit. If they want better AC they'll need to invest in at least Str (13 for a shield) and possibly Str and Con (heavier armor).

Both should most likely avoid anything less than a 18 in their primary stat (after race boosts) if using a standard point buy or array.

If he gets beat up a lot, have him take Toughness. It'll give him more HP, which will in turn increase all of his healing surges. And it scales every ten levels.

Party composition is the most important thing.

Do you have any Defenders?
Are they doing a decent job Defending?

I'm with most of the posters here. We can help you, but we need to know:

1) What build cleric is he (STR or WIS)?
2) What is the rest of the party (and their builds) ?

Without knowing the mix of melee to ranged attackers in your party and the cleric's build it is near impossible to advise you correctly.

The party contains a dragonborn paladin, a half-elf cleric, tiefling warlord, human wizard, and a dwarven fighter.
The cleric is 90% support and healing while our big dudes (the dwarf and dragonborn) deal out melee damage. The wizard stays in the back and does ranged attacks and the warlord does a little melee, and some healing.

It seems like the cleric is pretty squishy and gets picked on a lot. His attacks aren't very prone to hit (bad dice?)

This may be obvious to everyone here, but there is something that seems to get overlooked a lot:

Clerics are perfectly justified in healing themselves if they are the ones getting beaten upon.
