Ley Lines + Rituals

I'm totally digging how simple it seems like it will be to add things like Ley Lines and Places of power to the game...

Ley lines give you a bunos to your skill check? or maybe reduce the cost.... Nexuses give both? (Or some other combination...)

Places of power being similar... It's just easier to conduct a divine ritual in a sacred place where a saint performed his first miracle... Or easier to perform an arcane ritual in the old faerie ring.

Total agreement. This is going to be a great way to do that sort of thing in a meaningful fashion while not particularly unbalancing combat.

Oh yeah. I'm already planning on linking some of the more powerful (or plot-relevant) rituals to certain places and times. The whole, "You must perform the ritual in the circle of standing stones under the light of a full moon" thing has a heck of a lot of adventure building potential.

Same here, same here. Especially when it comes to Ley Lines and Nexuses, since they are extremely important to the setting.

They are essentially the conduits from which reality is emitted, and is controlled by the God Machine. However, since it has begun to malfunction, so has the Ley Lines and Nexuses.

Thus why magical abilities (which is based off bending reality) and rituals work better near Ley Lines, since instead of reinforcing reality like they used to, they create zones where the rules of reality shift.

It is also the only places in my world to have magical items born, since this reality shifting can cause different properties to meld with an item (if you have ever seen the mini-series "The Lost Room" it is like that).

It will also be a skill-challenge to identify when their near a Ley Line, sometimes it will be more obvious and thus give bonuses. But other times, it will be a "passive skill-challenge" as the players move through the area, I will do passive perception checks to see if they succeed in noticing the markings of a Ley Line.

I think I'm going to require some of these ley-lines or nexuses to use certain rituals. Raise Dead needs not only the hard to find mystical salve, but also needs to be preformed in an area that had been dedicated to the god of death by means of some sort of hallow ritual. Maybe the ritual can be done at other places, but is more expensive/difficult. It would help explain why not every important head of state cannot be raised, and can be particularly flavorful.

I'm not sure how it would work with the rest of the rituals, but I don't see why it wouldn't be too bad in practice.

Another thought, the 'standard' raise dead ritual as presented in the books will be the one that must be performed on hallowed ground to the god of death. But, there is another ritual, which can be learned, as a separate ritual.
