Lg opponent, threatened squares, charge, and AoA

What is an AoA? :p

Anyway... You can also use ranged weapons as well. No need to get into melee combat if ya don't have to.

You can also take Total Defense (Standard Action) and use your Move action to close in, if you are close enough. You'll still provoke an AoO but hopefully that +4 to AC will help. Next turn you can unleash on him. Of course he'll get a turn to unleash on you too, but again, you'll get that +4 to AC :)

If so, how can a medium creature engage in combat with a large creature without provoking an AoA? The 5' step does not provoke an AoA but it is not enough to close with the large creature. It seems that moving into, then out of that 10' threatened square before entering the 5' square where you attack from will always provoke the AoA.

Out of the threatened square, but not into it. You can close to 10 ft away with a normal move, then 5 ft step next round, and not provoke any AoOs. Of course, you do stand around getting full-attacked for a round so it may not be the best move, but it can be done.

glass.

The group I play with seems to think that charging allows you to avoid the AoO's from moving through threatened squares for the the person you are charging. Is that correct? Because from your discussion it does not seem that way.

Your group is wrong.

The charge action does not say "avoids inducing AoOs".

The advantage of the charge is the ability to move up to twice your move and still attack. Even the bonus to the attack roll is a minor benefit in comparison. Movement in combat is key.

That's what I thought, but they are sure they saw omething in the FAQ about it. Being able to easily negate AoOs for reach basically makes all reach weapons worthless, IMO. The big thing for reach stuff is if you are not flatfooted, you always get the first swing in combat, which sometimes can be big. Taking that away makes all reach weapons suck.

No, they didn't :)

If you look at the Table of Action Types, you'll note that Charge is AoO: No... but it carries a footnote that explains that while the charge action itself doesn't provoke an AoO, you still provoke AoOs for movement as normal if you leave a threatened square.
