Library Collection Managers

Nacht

First Post
I was wondering what software/sites people use to catalog their game and/or book collections. I have found a couple of online sites that are pretty good - Shelfari and LibraryThing, but was wondering what else was out there. Shelfari has a nice social networking element to it, and is easy to use, but its search sources are a bit limited, and there doesn't seem to be a way yet to add books not found in the search. LibraryThing has much better search and edit features, but is a bit chaotic in layout and charges a fee if you put in more than a small number of books.

Anyone know of anything better?

If anyone else uses these sites, my username on both is Semichrist.

I'm interested in this thread though it probably should be in the software section.

I'd like something similar to DVD profiler, but anything that would help me to organize my book collection would be a bonus. I haven't updated my dvdprofile since my divorce (so take this dvd list with a grain of salt.) I like dvdprofiler for my dvds because I have a local application that I can use for my indexing. When I didn't have everything in boxes, I use to print off my collection list and organize. If I loaned out a DVD there were places to keep track of it in the program. The DVD information page had the covers of the DVDs and a list of all the actors & directors in the movie. I'd love that feature to be in a book version....similar to the pen&paper website...a list of every artist, editor, writer, etc.

It would be nice also if you clicked on a writer, artist, editor, etc, if it would pull up other stuff they have done.

You're right, this probably should have been in the software forum. I somehow missed that one in looking at the forum list. Sorry about that.

DVDProfiler is exactly what I have really been looking for in a book collection manager. Unfortunately, I haven't found anything like it yet. For quite a while, I had wanted to build something like that to work with the RPG Database, but I simply haven't found the time...

Off to software we go...

In 1994, I spent a lot of time meticulously entering my entire library into a Filemaker database on an old Mac I was using. I finished it, but forgot to back up the final db to floppy.

The hard drive died less than a week later.

I've never had the courage (or time) to try that again. :)

I've always used spreadsheets- currently Excel.

a simple spreadsheet would work but it is too labor intensive. What I think the OP wants and what I'd like is something where you type in the ISBN or UNC and all the other information pops in. By other information I mean the name, authors, artists, etc. If you are the first person to type in the ISBN or UNC then you can fill out all the needed information and other people won't have to do that.

I can't recall the name, but there's a Mac-only program that uses the built-in camera to scan and identify the bar code and do an automatic lookup of the book. Basically you just wave it in front of your computer and it finds it for you. Slick, but sadly it's Mac only.
