Lich and Characters

wallshot

First Post
i run a game where a NE necromancer wants to become a lich. The lich template only requires the ability to create a phylactery which is any spell caster that has craft wonderous items...

my question, is that all there is to it? no need to cast soulbind or hide life or spells of that nature? no long ritual that cant be interupted or sacrifices that need to be made? He creates the gem and thats it?

i know its my game and i can change as i deem worthy, but that seems awfully light requirements...

looking for info, insights and .02's

thnx in advance

lich requirements.

Making the phylactery isn't a simple matter.

The caster has to be a wizard, sorc or cleric of at *least* 11th lvl. (I'd raise this as a DM).

The bloody thing costs 120,000 gp to create.

It also costs 4800exp.

So... it's not just a matter of "poof, phylactery." The requirements, as is are fairly substantial.

Unless the player is in an evil party though, I don't see his lichification being welcomed by the other players.

In a case where he's evil and they're not... I'd say that if he became a lich, he'd immediatly be transformed into an NPC under DM control.

also, the MM says the phylactery is 'an integral part of becoming a lich', but not the only part. i don't know if any d20 supplements go into this more, but in 1e & 2e there were also certain spells and magic elixers involved.

getting those types of spells and potion formulas may be a huge obstacle for your player (if you end up allowing it).

(and i doubt any existing lich is going to give up that information. at least not for free. -and not to a groupie)

As well as 120 days of dark rituals and blowing all that XP and GP. Killing children to steal their collective lifespans, compacting with demons to maintain the functionality of the ageing dead body, and offering 12 year old girls to dark gods for the power needed to enact the transformation.

As to how to go about it, use your imagination. Mechanical effects are going to be vast and varied. The number of abilities, immunities, benefits, and powers that the lich template gives a PC is worth 5 levels of any other class or prestige class.
