Liches

One drd5/shifter15 PC destroyed the wiz35 lich with one single touch attack! He has a feat from Savage Species that can grant one supernatural ability of the creature he wild shapes into (at the cost of some minor penalties), so he took the form of a celestial (avoral iirc) with a lay-on-hands-ability and blasted the lich to pieces with positive energy during combat round one...

The sure sign of a badly run lich. Why is the guy within touching range of the lich? No matter what kind of duel these powerhouses are having they should not be completely without minions or defenses (ie: the kind that kills a character stupid enough to try touching them).

Also:
A) The guy should never come close to a lich without getting killed by both the duelists.
B) Even if he did, the lich and the duelist should opt to dispel whatever pansy effect the guy comes up with
C) Teleport is ALWAYS an option for an ultra-high level character, esp. in the case of a tainted duel.

So is surreptitiously slipping into one of the adventurers' heads to later take him over as an instrument of vengeance when seemingly defeated and he takes your orichalcum arm.

Oh, er, nothing.

By the way, ciaran, get ahold of me- you need to rejoin my game, man! Hobbes would kick ase in 3.5, especially once the Expanded PsiHB comes out!

Hi

As for the best liches book i can tell you that the upcoming book from bottled imp games will be the best one for sure.

It's very different to other books , has 7 new types of liches , new powers , al that you want to know on the spectral plane plus rules , all that you want to know about kethak: the city of lost souls , it's the city of the Arcane liches, also rules for controling the sorcerae power : the power of creation and much much more , you should all see the previews for this book.

Also from what i heard and saw the art in the liches book will be Awsome and it will be released in the 17th November.

And if you even don't have the vampires book from them , buy it now , it's by FAR , the best on the market and you are missing it.

You are stuck in the mode of thinking that 1 monster of a CR equal to the party is a standard encounter. Indeed that is exactly how the rules work. But it has been my experience and hopefully any other DM worth their salt that such a tactic, where the players can gang up on 1 bad guy, is folly, at least if you want a difficult or interesting battle.

The solution is 2 or more creatures of slightly lower CR's. So, say a lich and his vampire cohort or enslaved sorcerer or something like that.

Or, in the case of my campaign, a sea hag demi-lich witch and four hag coveys under her control. :D

After DM-ing since 3rd ed. came out, I finally got to put see a party go up against a lich this last friday! Major let-down... They interfered with a battle they were supposed to stay out of, but they insisted on butting in. A wiz35 lich vs. a wiz28/ftr8 lich, and the lvl 19-20 PCs decided to get involved!

Should mean certain TPK, right? Wrong!

One drd5/shifter15 PC destroyed the wiz35 lich with one single touch attack! You realize of course that unless he destroyed the phylactery that you drd5/shifter15 now has a torqued-off wiz35 lich gunning for him?

Not bad enough he interfered with his duel, but he made him look like an idiot in front of the less powerful wizard-lich.

It's not that you didn't get a TPK, you just didn't get the TPK yet...

Oh, the phylactery was found and destroyed by the other lich...

My ever-creative players hired some helpers before the encounter, five guys who did nothing but stand ready with a Greater Dispelling whenever the lich tried to cast a spell. Ok, so they needed to roll a 20 to make their counterspells work, but with five guys trying (and some really lucky rolling!) they managed to keep that lich pretty much helpless...

To answer your questions properly, I'd have to give you a detailed account of an encounter that involved more than 100 NPCs, a couple of dozens red dragons, five balors and my five players (and a partridge in a peartree!) and took us 14 hours to play through; finally bringing the PCs to lvl 21... I'm not gonna do that...
