Lighthearted Campaign Ideas

Actually I just went back to the Atlas site and I could no longer find the Hell Cow adventure, they have a different one up now, All that Glitters (It's too bad, the Hell Cow was hilarious, I think it was originally put up when they were soliciting submissions for En Route).

Some ideas…

1) A swashbuckler campaign is always good for light heartedness, allowing the PCs to swing from chandeliers, romance fetching women (or handsome men), toss off lots of one liners, etc.

2) Something like the swashbuckler campaign – have the PCs set up as some Robin Hood types that will allow them to tweak the noses of the powerful, rich and stuffy.

3)Or, have the PCs start off in what seems like a normal campaign, but have them zapped into another dimension only to discover that they are some strange futuristic world where a small rebel force is fighting off an evil empire and their soldiers in white armor, led by a powerful fallen knight dressed all in black.
 

Do something sorta like the old Traveller game -- the PCs own a free trader merchant caravan and get into all kinds of fun adventures as they try to turn a modest profit travelling the length and breadth of the kingdom.

Failing that, BiggusGeekus has a great idea! :) I don't know of official products that would help you, though. I avoid modules like the plague, except as occasional plot-hook mines to steal from.
 


Thanks again Voadam, that is what I am looking for specific modules (not just ideas). I have En Route, I will take a closer look at it. I wish I could get Hell Cow, it sounds exactly like what I am looking for, MORE HUMOR LESS DEATH. I will buy Harvest of Darkness to see if I can remove the horor elements from it and use the plots they soung good.

Joshua, I use modules for the plot hooks as well as the maps. I find it easier if a module has the basic feel I am looking for, to change it, than to design the entire adventure. And I have a huge collection of them I may as well use them.
 

I agree, I just can't help you because I rarely look at modules. In fact, besides one I got for free, the only ones I own are the Witchfire Trilogy. And I think Banewarrens and one of the Freeport ones. I haven't even read those yet, though.
 

Another one is the original 1e WG? Castle Greyhawk joke supermodule. It has various dungeon levels each with a different theme, often parodying something and some of them can work well if run straight. My party was quite proud of the fact that they recovered the very first artefact to show up in my campaign, the Mithril Breadknife of Greyhawk (+5 versus food monsters of which one level has a ton including cruel gummi-werebears, the squeaky little dough golem, and the dreaded mind-filleter).

Many of the levels in there are way over the top, however, and I dislike the last level a lot.

Lighthearted Campaigns

I have three suggestions:

1. Run a Fair or Tourney. There is on online gaming module currently on sale (see above "Sale Bonanza" bulletin on this same message board) called "Tournaments, Fairs and Taverns" that is excellent. Several years ago I started an annual fair for the party to attend, and we've revisited it four other times since then.

2. I recently ran a lighthearted one-night game from Dungeon Magazine. I seem to have misplaced the issue, so can't tell you the name and number (somebody please help here) but it was about a pair of giants who kept cockatrices, calling them chickens, and they put a bunch of petrified stone gnomes in their gardens. It was a lot of fun.

3. Run a Tavern Night. That is an unscripted game, usually without a DM, where all of the characters just sit around in a tavern and have their characters tell stories. We've had several of these. Have one or two players prep a colorful NPC to throw in and play if you hit a lull in the conversaton.
