Like Fantasy novels? I got one for you.....

And Erickson's scope, and the sweep of his imagination, are awesome. This is a story that could only be told in the fantasy genre. It's about ideas that could not possibly be expressed in any other milieu. Halfway through and I'm blown away by what he's accomplished. It remains to be seen if he'll be able to close things off, but right now I'm full of confidence.

This nicely summarizes my thoughts on the books.

Can I just say: Yes!

Please be aware that each novel has an ending! The story goes on from there, but there is a satisfying conclusion to the first two -- and I understand the rest are like that as well. Not that you'll want to stop reading, of course. ;)

I discovered Erikson by accident and actually really enjoyed Gardens of the Moon (the first one), although I have often heard since then that it is tough to read. :uhoh:

I am midway through book 3 now and I really think these are amazing stories. The cultures and ideas are fascinating and not, IMO, gimmicky like cultures in some fantasy novels (or D&D) can be.

Fans of Glen Cook's Black Company should take special note. The world of Erikson is very reminiscent (although the writing style is different) of Cook's. Erikson even cites Cook as a major influence.

I wrote a review of Gardens of the Moon for rpg.net. Head over and do a search for it, if you want some more "details" -- although the review speaks in general terms. The review can be found here:

Just to say, Yuan-Ti, that if you're halfway through Book 3 (Memories of Ice), then I would hazard a guess to say that you're about to revise your opinion about Erickson's "grimness" with respect to Martin.

Memories of Ice will haunt you. It is a dark and deeply disturbing book, full of many many very very bad things.

I am intrigued. I am looking for a series to get into. Because the series isn't done won't stop me. I tried Jordan and hate him, mostly because nothing happens.

Love GRRM, his books are always moving forward. You say these are to? Well I might just have to pick up the first one.

Whats the name of the first book again?
