Limits of Scrying?

Black Omega

First Post
Not really a question that has come up yet, but it may soon.

Let's say someone is using a diviniation at a distance spell like Arcane Eye to follow someone around closely. Now let's say someone else detects the Arcane Eye with a detect magic check or something. He knows there is a divination spell active on a spot that moves around.

Is this enough to attempt a scry on the person running the Arcane Eye? At best I'm guessing it would be a scry check at the max DC of 20. No bonus to connection, you know nothing of the subject beyond 'Whoever is casting this divination spell'. Would this be enough to attempt a scry?

I'm not sure if there is a way to backtrack the Arcane Eye or not, so I'm asking now before it comes up in my game.

"I scry the unknown person with a headband of intellect +6, that will sell it to me."

Can't really say, where the limits are, but we only allow the "no knowledge whatsoever about the person" scry check, if you have an item (material link) in your possession. It seems the only way, this second table does have any reasonable purpose anyways.

The rules for the spell explicitly back up what the previous poster said. From the SRD entry for "Scrying":

Knowledge: None*... *The character must have some sort of connection to a creature the character has no knowledge of.

Connection: Likeness or picture... Possession or garment...
Body part, lock of hair, nail clippings, etc.

So, seeing a scrying sensor fails to qualify as one of the required connections if you have no knowledge of the target.
