Here's a link to a story I wrote inspired by the monster Faer, a living Phantasmal Killer spell dwelling on the Ethereal Plane. It's in a modern setting, actually the neighbourhood I grew up in. I think it could be a good start for an adventure, especially a modern Cthulhu tale.
