You know, I forgot to factor in some things (like that it has no arms and no legs) so one could make the cost something like:

1000 gp per Warden Jack
(20 xp, 50 gp body cost)

I'm fudging the body cost, because in the overall scheme, it affects little except what an artificer is paid to make the body.

Also, the general trend is that a great deal of the cost of a construct is in the animation ritual. Components which would usually be dirt cheap to accumulate (dirt, for example, maybe wood) are balanced by the costs of the magical apparatus, disposable components, inks and resins, and other nonsense associated with the ritual itself.

how about this?

CONSTRUCTION
A warden jack is molded in the shape of a small metal sphere. Each warden jack costs 1000 gp to create, which includes 50 gp for the body. The cost of labor includes drilling cylinders in the metal and fitting the piston spikes, which takes an entire day of work before the magic ritual can take place. Assembling the body requires a successful Craft (blacksmithing) check (DC X).

The creator must be Xth level and able to cast arcane spells. Completing the ritual drains 20 XP per warden jack from the creator and requires animate objects, limited wish, and guards and wards. The creator can make no more than one dozen warden jacks in a single session.

Hard to say. I'd estimate the craft DC to be about 20.

Caster level.... that depends on whether we want to require the Craft Wondrous Item" feat... the minimum caster level for that should be adequate, as would the minimum caster level for the spells required.

bit of a problem. i posted this in another forum and someone reminded me that animate object is a cleric spell... yet we have it so that only arcane spellcasters can create a warden jack. ;) got an idea to resolve this?

maybe caster level 13th, as the is the minimum for casting limited wish?

i think i'll set the Craft DC at 22, as it would require a master craftsman to set this up.

how does that sound?

There are already precedents in which there is a mix of divine and arcane spells needed for construct creation.

A Shield Guardian, for example, requires:
- Limited Wish (Sor/Wiz 7)
- Locate Object (Brd 2, Clr 3, Sor/Wiz 2, Travel 2
)
- Make Whole (Clr 2)
- Shield (Sor/Wiz 1)
- Shield Other (Clr 2, Pal 2, Protection 2)
I looked through EA: Constructs, and there just isn't a clear section detailing how to resolve spell requirements from both divine and arcane schools.
My inclination would be that someone would need to be able to cast both arcane and divine spells, and could then be able to use a scroll from their spell list (though not one they necessarily created, or could even cast at their level).

Maybe there is something in the Sage's FAQ.
