Living with room-mates.

What's the phone situation? I know a lot of people have cell phones, so if you all do, that's not really a problem. In fact, bills in general are the easiest part.

Cleaning is an important one to establish early on. I (and my other roomies) had a problem with one guy who was a pig. My two friends are living together and can't stop complaining about the other with regards to cleaning - even though they're both about the same, IMO.

Be prepared for all your friends' little quirks to be magnified, since you're going to have to deal with them day in and day out.

All in all though, unless someone is a real jerk, these things tend to work themselves out pretty well.

I personally would room with as FEW people as humanly possible (1 or 2 at most). The more people the more you get into petty squabbles IMHO, anyway.

Second, don't bother with long distance - or a phone if you can. Next cleaning is an issue and it's difficult to get a lazy person/dirty person to clean up after himself. You can threaten with bodily harm and hide their dirty stuff, but at the end of the day, they are who they are.

Lastly, make sure each person has their name on the lease. If a roomates tries to have a relative or girlfriend live there rent-free and lease-free, make it an issue before it becomes an issue.

In closing, I have lived with several people over my college-days and all I can say is:

If you can live with roommates, you can live with anyone.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I've set up a meeting with my future room-mates and then we will discuss the things put forward by you.

Once again, thanks.

My advise is, if you can possibly avoid it, don't have roommates. Nothing but trouble. I have lost 2 good friends because we were roommates. Things start out fine, but then the little things start to bother you. Things get said. Just gets messy.

But then I am a moody half-dragon, so maybe it is just my fault. Still be forewarned.

The thing is, the average waiting time for a place to rent for one person is about 8 years here (Amsterdam). Once you get above a certain price the apartments are a lot easier to get. So I just wanna get out of the apartment I'm living in now for a few years until I can buy my own place. And to do that fast, I need roommates.

Worst Case Scenario: I live at Hotel Mama for a few months.
