Lizardman with Great Club

The Lizardfolk in the MM lists a greatclub as the standard weapon for them. It also lists a large shield as standard equipment. Since the lizardfolk are medium-sized humanoids and the greatclub is a large-sized weapon, is it correct to assume they could never use the greatclub and the shield at the same time?

Correct, they cannot use a greatclub and shield at the same time.

Note that there are a whole lot of "or"s in the lizardfolk stat block -- it's not true that a large shield is "standard equipment". A bunch of alternatives are being listed, which ties into the text note (under "Combat") that "advanced tribes use more sophisticated tactics".

Possible core presentation of a lizardman:
- no shield, no weapon (2 claws & bite) - standard equipment
- no shield, greatclub, bite
- shield, claw, bite
- shield, javelin
