odd. The video of Nessy is more proof then the proof your offer of its non proof. You can prove that the fames picture of Nessy head was a hoax, as they later found the silhouette used.

but perhaps you should wait until this video is falsified first?

Your statment is * while probably true, doesen't disprove the video. *

I admit though, its still not very strong evidence as evidence goes, but it is interesting.

I always thought that picture looked like someone swimming.

IMC the LNM may or may not exist. There is, however, an aquatic beastie somwthing in size between Manhatten and the Isle of Man. The PCs have been inside it but didn't do much exploring.

Nessie was an effelump! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/4779248.stm

Personally, I like the idea of the unidentified monster the PC's only get a glimpse of... in the STAP there is a point during the voyage between Sasserine and the IoD where one of the suggested random events is the sighting of an eye the size of a really big eye appearing above the water, then vanishing again...

20,000 leagues under the sea stylee...

That way, the PC's can decuide wether to chase after it, prompting a new adventure, or wether to be terrified of me using it later.

Yes, and no.

There are lake monsters, sure. And sea monsters, and unidentified monsters.

But that means, in a sense, there is nothing analogous to the Loch Ness Monster - because there are so many other monsters, it isn't plausible that one particular beast carry such an air of fascination and mystery.

I mean, it'd be like sending out researchers and having long drawn-out arguments and wishful thinking over... your cup of coffee :)

I like the idea of having a huge creature, that no one can definitely say exists, being the focus of an adventure. Sketchy details about what sort of creature it is; where it came from; who has or has not seen it; some folks believing in it while others swear against it -- these are the mysterious elements that make an adventure more than just a simple hunt for beast and treasure. This is the magic and sense of wonder that the game needs in abundance.

A D&D world by definition is full of the unexplained, the unknown, and the fantastic, so having something as mundane as Nessie in my D&D world would be rather boring.

Fascinating in real life, boring in D&D.

Unless is was a dire, fiendish, vampiric, pseudonatural Nessie that is. ;)

Hârn has a couple of big lakes. There are rumours of giant serpent-like creatures, so yes, the equivalent of a ‘Loch Ness monster’ (unsubstantiated rumours of a big critter). However, unlike the real Loch Ness, it’s possible that my players will one day encounter such a critter.

Neat! I don't know if that is or isn't Nessie, but I still find it interesting to see.

In my old campaign in Nevere, there was an enormous sea monster that terrorized the ocean between the continents. The gaming group encountered it twice - I never gave the thing stats, as it was more a force of nature than something to be killed.

They were utterly terrified both times, so I think mysterious creatures can still have an impact in a game.
