Yeah, basically, it's because facing also no longer exists. In a way, every creature faces every direction at the same time.

But there are certain kinds of monsters for which the rule doesn't work very well: snake/wormlike creatures. Unless you're assuming they're always curled up, they often don't even fit into their space.

I really hate the 2x2 long creature standard. The 10' fat horse clogs the battlemat something fierce. Its fat ass eats up so much room, the main way it eases play is by discouraging players from bringing their mounts to combat.
