Long rambling newbie monk multiclass question..

Ok - so I did just barely skim the PHB and decide that Monk is the way to be - cause it sounded cool. Two fists of fury and whatnot - justice for all.

Annnnnd then comes out sword and fist with the ultra cool Drunken Master, and im thinkin Nifty - Ill be the Drunk Monk with a quart of Ballentine. Roleplay opportunities abound!! Im taking brewing Profession ranks and looking forward to the Jackie Chan moves that will be - but wait...

No more Monk levs after taking a Drunken Master Lev? (as I rescan the PHB cause I dont know how BAB + Multiclass Monk work) Whats up with that? Not sooo cool, as the whole -Ill meld the fighting styles and create something entirely new and if I live long enough start my own school on some remote hillside bit that is my character background kinda goes away. I mean what lev 5 Monk creates a fighting style.

You can not really start a school of Drunken Mastery now can you - and I feel that if I'm playing 3E I might as well multiclass.. so
what now gentle readers? I would like to not wait around to take another class, while at the same time getting enough Monk exp to make it plausible to retire this guy an Abbott somewheres. Suggestions?

(this will probably all go to naught, as he'll probably get chopped up into bits this weekend, but it is an interesting excersise for a novice like me)

First thing you should do is talk to your DM. A lot of them (such as myself,) allow monks to multiclass under certain circumstances. The fact that you're talking about multiclassing between a monk and a very monk-like prestige class (Drunken Master) makes it even more likely that a reasonable DM will allow you to do so. A monk multiclassing into a paladin is questionable, but a monk multiclassing with a drunken master is sensible.

Of course, if your DM holds true to the rules as written in the PH without question, then you're out of luck. In such a situation, you simply have to put off becoming a drunken master. Take a straight 10 levels of monk, then a straight 10 in drunken master.

First, like Lord Pendragon said, most DM's will let you slide a little on monk multiclassing. I think WOTC's playtester desire for limitations stepped in a little to hard here, but that's neither here nor there.

However, if your DM is a stick to the rules type, go to the WOTC website and show him the S&F errata. According to that your monk can freely multiclass with drunken master anyways.
