Long term Campaign Help

re

When I'm burning out (I DM most of the time), my buddies and I usually end up playing a completely different game or doing some other activity for a few weeks or more (not usually more than a month). Here are some suggestions for alternate activities that your whole group can enjoy, so you keep in the habit of getting together during campaign downtime:

1. Play a Board game or card game you might all enjoy like Talisman, Magic or Axis and Allies.

2. Watch a flick.

3. Alternate Campaign that someone else runs, so you can play a little and be on the receiving end of some DM creativity.

Ultimately, just taking a break from gaming for even a few weeks does wonders. I don't know if it is age or Third Edition, but I burn out alot easier than I used to because of the redundancy of the game. Sometimes D&D seems stale and I feel like doing something else for awhile. Wish I could be more helpful.

Since we very seldom seem to have longish running campaigns going (in fact, that's exactly what I'd like to see for our group!) I'm probably not the person best equipped to answer the question.

However, because we're playing different campaigns, or all-out different games, swapping between D&D to Star Wars to d20 Modern to Mutants and Masterminds... we never get tired of gaming at least.

My suggestion would be to run a completely different mini-campaign as a break. With any luck, you'll either be enthused to come back to your regular campaign after that, or enthused to try something new. Either way, you'll be enthused about gaming, which is what really counts.

BTW - working on a certain undead guy as we speak. ;)

Great! :D

and to reiterate what Joshua Dyal said, mixed with what I know of you.

To lose a DM or player of your caliber would be a great loss to the RPG community. Every response has offered great suggestions, but when you've attained players that have come to expect your high level of work and you've reached a point where you can't deliver that, then you'll have to level with your players. They'll either support trying new/different things or they won't, if your heart is not in it, they'll know. Then you'll lose most if not all of them. My advice is to tell them you're hitting a dry spell, and in order to help you get back the desire that's within you, they're going to have to have an open mind and try some different things. From having met some players you've gamed with, I'm sure they will be understanding and helpful in any way they can. :)

Good Luck. We're all here for ya.

HM (Robert) is right - I have received some solid suggestions here. I'll be thinking about that change of pace this weekend. Thank you for your help.
