Looking for a character maintainance program...

Eraslin

First Post
Hello all,
Does anyone know of a good character maintainance program? The main features that I'm looking for are:

- Automatic skill bonus calculation -- based on ranks, stat bonus, and an inputted misc modifier.

- Equipment management in a tree sort of layout; I want to be able to keep track of what item is in which container. Ideally with automatic calculation of weight carried (it should be able to have a weight override of some sort, for when items are placed within a bag of holding like container)

- Spell selection management -- spells known/prepared.

- Automatically calculating to hit and damage bonuses for various weapons.

Anything else would just be icing on the cake.

So, does anyone know of a program which can do these things?

Thanks,
Eraslin

I would suggest PCGen, which has everything you mention except the equipment management tree. It works in a kind of step-by-step tabs format: the first two tabs are the bare basics: your race and 6 ability scores. On the next tab, you can add/subtract levels of any class the character is qualified for (it automatically checks prerequisites for prestige classes). In similar fashion, there are tabs for feats, skills, spells, equipment, class features, and even a character sheet generator. I like it a lot. :)

Thanks, I'll take a look at PCGen; but I suspect it won't be sufficient for what I'd like. The equipment management is actually the most important part to me. ;)
Arguably, if anyone knows of a program that one can use to just do the equipment management I'd be quite happy. :)

PCgen does have a equipment inventory control systems. You can place things inside of containers, ect. It will calulate weight carried and modify your stats and movement for it.

They are working on a system that allows you to have multipile confiurations of what and where you are carring things. This part is still in the works but looks promising.

I stand corrected. My first post was based on a version of PCGen I downloaded back in January. I've since gotten the new one, and I've gotta say it's an improvement. :D

Yea, it looks and works quite well. I just wish that it was easy for the aveage non computer geek to add classes, monster and similar stuff to. They say that it is but I can't figure out the .1st files for the life of me.

I would also recommend:

It is a very good excel file that does everything for your character... And you can put your equipment where you want it, and it calculates encumberance etc. You can choose if equipment is in packs,or on your mount (or saddlebages), and make them dropable in combat so it doesn't count against encumberance.

Give it a try... it's free after all... he also has a spell management sheet.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll definately give PCGen a try. It's nice that it was written for multiple platforms in mind...

As for the excel file, thank you for the suggestion mike, but I neither use nor own MS-Office; I have no program to work with excel files at all. :p
