did find it amusing how the Winter Wight scaled form nasty in TOH, to really nasty in RttTOH, to incredibly evil in ELH.

I didn't think the Winter Wight appeared anywhere before RttToH. Where did you see it now?

Oops, my mistake, Winter Wights don't make an appearance in ToH. That really would have made things tough in that adventure.

TSR did. It's one of the best boxed sets they ever produced.

Yes, it's 2nd edition. It was originally designed for 14th-16th level characters, but if you convert everything using it's 3rd edition equivalents, I wouldn't let a character anywhere beneath 20th to GO NEAR the module. It's extremely deadly, but also extremely fun... I highly recommend digging up a copy (the ESD is available, but due to the size, I'd recommend getting the actual boxed set).
