Looking for a good fantasy city (d20)

I ordered The Great City hardback from Lulu. I've never ordered from them before so it will be interesting to see the production quality of a print-on-demand book.

The only issue I might have with this product is the map. For a city with 50,000 residents, it looks like it has too few buildings.

I think the map in the '89 City of Greyhawk boxed set experienced the same problem. And, later, when they re-issued a map of the city in the Living Greyhawk Journal they added more buildings to it.

In fact, I was doing some investigation on the 0one forums, and one of the designers posted this errata:

Great City Errata as of 12/20/09

Great City Population
Azindralea 8,000
Outer Boroughs 16,000

Total Population = 24,000

Apparently, this makes it a Large Town.

Anyway, I guess the map can just be representational and each building can really represent a cluster of 50 or so smaller structures?

would not worry about building, does it have scale? what is the square area covered by the city? Example: Manhattan is 22 square miles but is only 14 miles long and 2.5 or so miles wide. so, as how long does it take to get to point A to Z at any given time?

what the map should be is a guide showing where the point of interest are.

Also, don't forget three stories up, two stories down, for building designs.

Population note: that is how many people live in the city, what is the population of sailors, merchants, and adventurers. This can bump the pop even higher. Another note, who is counted in the population, is it only tax payers?

My favorite city ever is Midkemia Press' Carse. You might be able to find it, but I bought it way back in the 80s.

The original Thieves World (Chaosium) was pretty cool, too.

Both are system neutral.

I did not know the Great City was offered in HC from Lulu, I'll be getting that ASAP!

Another great supplement series that has served me well for over 20 years (I think its been that long, is the City series by Flying Buffalo. Tons and tons of great NPC personalities, shops, and just tons and tons of ideas and materials to help you bring any city to life. I have been using them since my 1E days, I think. Definitely my 2E days.

Carse was just fantastic, I used it in three seperate campaigns (with different players) over three editions and for approx. 15 years- I think my copy fell apart in the end. Thanks for reminding me...

Now where to get my hands on another copy.

The Great City is a fantastic book, with interesting concepts and an EXCELLENT Campaign.

However, it relies on one premise : being a colony of a far-off empire so I am not sure it would fit the FR.

The print value from Lulu is excellent, though B&W.

If you are willing to do some adaptations to fit it in, it would be a great choice, but not necessarily ifyou want out of the box.
