Looking for a Point Buy - Dice mix posted here once...

That looks good! Thanks kenjib! :)

Dr. Zoom: I liked this method so much from the earlier thread that I incorporated it into my house rules.

I think it's the thread mentioned here, which I saw. ;)

Bye

70 + 1D10....Spread that total out among the 6 abilities....Racial bonuses not used.

The maximum starting stat is 16...

If a race gets a +2 to an ability, then the max starting stat for that is 18....if the race gets -2, then the max starting is 14.

Here's a couple methods for a more randomized point-buy, or more balanced rolled characters:

- Roll normal 4d6 characters, then increase or decrease stats to match a desired point-buy (if the point-buy value of your rolled stats is too low, you're only allowed to increase stats; vice-versa if you stats are too high).

- Roll only 3 stats with 4d6, other three are 25 (or 28, 32, etc) minus the first three (max 18). So if you roll 11, 15, 6, the other three are 14 (25-11), 10 (25-15), 18 (25-6, max 18).

- Take a deck of cards and throw out all but the cards numbered 1-6. Deal 6 piles of 4 cards and drop the lowest card from each pile. (very similar to 4d6, but much more balanced)

- Draw up a table of 6 (or 20) acceptable sets of scores. Players roll a d6 (or d20) to pick one of these.

One thing I'm thinking of doing is giving PCs a number of bonuses, like +10 or so, to divide among their stats. Half of the attributes have to be in the lower half (14, 16, 12) and the other half can be at the higher end (15, 17, 13). No stat can be higher than 18 without racial mods.

So you might end up with a character like this:
Str +3 (17)
Dex +1 (13)
Con +2 (14)
Wis +1 (12)
Int +2 (14)
Cha +1 (13)

28 pt buy addendum

I still like the 3d6 roll and point buy suggested above the best.
Here's a neat little add-no I plan on using for our 28 point game.

Each player declares 3 scores to add a +1 to (this really helps the monk who needs 3 high ability scores)

ROLL as normal, then FLIP, but before you do the point count ADD the 3 +1's to the scores. Then settle up the point buy as normal, but with 28 as the mean. THis should boost primary abilities a bit, while still holding true to the new system.

I'm not sure if I'd allow this for anything much higher, though.
The upper 30's point buy probably has enough standard deviation with the players buying everything.

PS: I really like the 1-6 card system mentioned above. Very classy. If you still allow swapping one pair, I imagine you'll get a similiar outcome as the standard 4d6, but w/o the high-end character potential which can unbalance a party.
