Looking for a Quick Start Guide for New Players

Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone knew of a place where I could download something to hand to new players who know almost nothing about RPGs and even less about Pathfinder, OGL or D&D versions. A 500 page rule book tends to be pretty scary, and I was hoping there might be something around 5 or 10 pages.

Thanks

Brace yourself. The following is not sarcasm.

D&D 3.5e / Pathfinder Quick-Start Guide v1.0

1} Find someone who's played the system before.
2} Play with them.
3} Learn from them.

Seriously, unless you've got a terribly huge amount of time on your hands it's going to be rough going picking up the core and just learning it through osmosis. It's laid out pretty decently but there's a lot to know. Finding a local game shop that hosts game nights and joining in or watching for a few sessions would help a lot.

That all being said, Paizo is likely to release a beginners' box set later this year that is likely to include trimmed-down rules specifically made to be accessible. That might be a good gateway drug.

take a look at the Pathfinder SORD http://www.enworld.org/forum/rpg-industry-forum/245517-sord-plus-paizos-new-rpg-released.html

it isn't a single page and
i think it's still five bucks
but it might help

Yep, that is pretty much what I figured too. I've got a few folks I'm trying to get interested in the game and showing them a 500+ page rule book is sure to scare them off. Normally I'll put together something of my own to introduce new folks, but wanted to double check before I started.

I am not aware of a good quick start guide. As noted earlier, a Beginners Box Set will be out later this year sometime, but that does not help you now. If it is hard finding a group in your area who can sort of mentor you, then I would suggest reading what you can and then sort of learn as you go. Sure you will make mistakes, not know how to handle certain things - but we've all been there.

This page:

Character Creation Outline - Pathfinder_OGC

offers a nice outline on crossing the first hurdle of creating a character. As you go through that process you can look up things as you need and learn as you build the character.

And you can always ask questions here as well.
