I was just thinking what a good multiclass combo you could make from the Cloistered Cleric (from Unearthed Arcana -- it's a cleric minus the heavy armor and martial training, plus more academic stuff like free access to the Knowlege domain) plus Wizard. But you don't want a wizard...

I've been playing a dwarf rogue/fighter for some time -- he's a tough little scrapper with a lot of hit points and he's mean with his thrown warhammer. However, his chief weakness is mobility (that 20' movement rate slows him down quite a bit).

How about a Half-Orc Ranger/Assassin/Mystic Theurge/Lich who is randomly evil, kicking puppies wherever he goes? Nah, I've done that one to death... Hrm...

I'm playing a bard in a PbP with plans to split my levels equally between bard and ranger. I picture him as a scholarly adventurer/woodsman.

Put the books and the dice away. Don't look at them, don't even think about them.

Picture a character in your mind. Without artificial constructs such as class, feats, and templates. Just imagine a fun character in your DM's world. Allow yourself to see what weapons he uses, how he uses them, and how he handles himself. Where did he come from? What does he want out of life? What does he care about?

Once you've done that, then figure out how to express him in the rules. If you start with the concept, even something simple like a farm-boy who decided to take up the sword will be a far more interesting character than one with a bunch of fancy feats and PrCs and templates and weird races.

Try rolling randomly! :) It can inspire and challenge you to try something really new. Let's see...no wizards...I'll just go with the core book here:

Race (Roll 1d8): 1. Human, 2. Dwarf, 3. Elf, 4. Gnome, 5. Half-elf, 6. Half-orc, 7. Halfling, 8. Somethin' wacky (monster class?).

Then roll on this chart once, twice, thrice...however many classes you want...

Class (Roll 1d10): 1. Barbarian, 2. Bard, 3. Cleric, 4. Druid, 5. Fighter, 6. Monk, 7. Paladin, 8. Ranger, 9. Rogue, 10. Sorcerer.

Roll till you got somefin' sweet. Here, I'll start (rolls):

Half-orc Bard/Druid! Dancing Bear, they call him.

Coph was raised in a dingy-but-bustling city by an abusive mother who reared him out of responsibility and nothing more. Wise as he was, he knew his mother's behavior wasn't his own doing--the dark circumstances surrounding his conception (an orc raid on his mother's village--the razing of her home is what forced her to move to the city) had left a deep scar of hatred in her heart. Anything resembling an orc (including her only son) brought forth horrible memories, etc... :)

Hope that helps, or at least entertains. :D

Pick a race. Any race. Doesn't matter. Pick a class. Any class. Doesn't matter. If you already know what the rest of the group is playing, pick a class that complements the others. Or don't. Then, Look at your class and race. Why is that character that class? What happened? For instance, this is one of my characters.

Kagonesti Elf Ranger. Boring, right?

However, her entire family was destroyed when she was younger by a group of goblins. This, obviously, makes her rather bitter towards goblins. Her racial enemy is goblins. She tattoed her entire body black in mourning of her family's death. She isn't suicidal by any means, and, while she hates goblins, she doesn't do anything stupid in trying to kill them. Not that she won't go a little out of her way to kill them. The longer she lives, the more goblins she can kill. You wouldn't know that her family was slaughtered unless you asked, because she doesn't act all mopey and stuff, fairly normal, actually.

You see? WHY are they that class. Was there any interesting things that happened for them to pick up any of the class abilities? If you put enough thought into it, even something as un-original as an Elven Ranger or Human Fighter can be interesting and unique. It's all in the background.
