Looking for Opinions on various RPG Tools

I'm looking for some opinions on the various RPG Tools that are out there.

The ones that I'm looking at are:

PCGen
Herolab
ETools
Campaign Suite

There maybe others that I'm not aware of so feel free to mention those, but I'm looking for the software in terms of the DM side of things to manage the campaign; to make and track NPCs, allows for custom rulesets or editing of the rulesets, player management, keeping notes, ect..
Not looking neccesarily for in-game applications though that might be a consideration in the near future.
Ideally I would like the equivilant of the AD&D Core Rules for 3rd edition.

thanks.

eTools is no longer supported. WotC allowed CMP's license for eTools to lapse on 11/30/06. Along with that license, CMP no longer has the license to create/distribute datasets based upon WotC's closed content books. TMK, no character generator currently has a license to do that.

Now, I'm biased towards PCGen. Its free. It requires Java 1.5/5.0 (we've not officially moved to 1.6/6.0) because it is cross-platform. It comes with the SRD, RSRD and MSRD. We have agreements with numerous publishers to distribute datasets based upon their material. You can create NPCs and custom datasets. If you have dataset questions, the documentation that comes with PCGen is constantly improving, and we have a Y! group set aside just for dataset questions.

Campaign Suite I know next to nothing about, so can't speak on that.

Hero Lab is working on acquiring licenses with publishers to do datasets. I know that they've gotten ones to do WW's WoD and GR's MnM. IIRC (haven't d/l'd the recent version), they don't have full RSRD support, but they are working towards that. I think Psionics just got added.

Trying not to step on toes, here, sorry, but I hate PCGen. Maybe I don't know how to use it, but all the clicky-clicky-clicky-clicky-clicky-clicky-clicky gets old real fast. Just last week, I tried it (again) on my new computer. 11th level half-orc barbarian. How long can that take to build? At least five times as long as I can do it in a spreadsheet. Want to add that +3 mithral full-plate? How about that +1 adamantine greataxe? sorry, you'll have to fight the living crap out of this program to get it to do what you want.

But that's my experience, I'm only one person, YMMV, etc. My dislike of PCGen is so strong only because my frustration is so fresh in my mind.

I tried Hero Lab last year, and it looked OK, I guess. I don't remember it much. E-Tools blows dead goats. Never heard of Campaign Suite.

I've given up on all the products out there. Word, Excel, and Access are all I need to run my campaign. Hopefully OpenOffice will live up to those, but I haven't had the chance just yet to try it.

Just make yourself some templates that do what you want them to do. "If you want something done right..."

For those, you right-click on the item to customize and then add the extras. For full plate, make it out of mithral and then add the +3. Greataxe, make it adamantine and then +1. How were you fighting the system?

I use DM Genie. You can find it here.

I have been using this program for many years and it is by far the best one I have used. I would suggest downloading the demo and taking it for a spin.

I first bought Campagin Suite and used that for about a week before finding DM Genie. I downloaded the demo and was hooked bought it the same day and have not open Campagin Suite sinces.

DM Genie covers everything from Combat Management, Campagin Management, Character creation and management, items, monsters. Plus it is all customizable you can add new spells, monsters, items and such. There is scripting as well for those who have more talent then I in the programing department to get very creative with customization.

Couple DM Genie with Maptools for those that either project the map or have players over the internet and you have a great suite of tools to use.

That's what I thought as well, but I had to do a few more steps. You have to click "Add Type" and then close the dialog before you can add the enhancement. It's certainly not intuitive.

we use maptool every session. The best utility out there.

I also highly recommend NPC Designer (www.rpgattitude.com). By far the best NPC creation tool around.

Our group also used DM Genie for quite awhile (we even ported City of the Spider Queen) but official support for the product has dropped down to almost zilch :(

What version are you using? I have 5.11.13 on this computer, and I just right-clicked on greataxe to "create custom item". I then double-clicked on adamantine, and then double-clicked on +1. Hit "OK", and you have your custom weapon.

All of us have standardized on using Hero Lab in one group, where I'm using it as a player. I'm also using it as a DM in another game.

As player, Hero Lab does everything it advertises quite nicely. However, I'm not a big fan of the Hero Lab character sheets. Fortunately, I bring my laptop to the game and only have a character sheet on-hand in case my laptop decides to go wonky, so I manage to side-step that facet of the tool. The in-play support within Hero Lab does everything I've needed, although I've sent some suggestions for refinements and enhancements to the dev team that would make it really nice. I also really like having all the integrated source material instantly accessible via mouse-over, so I don't have to go looking for anything.

As a DM, I keep every character up on the screen to keep abreast of things. I can also track the effects of secret adjustments locally with ease (e.g. cursed items, unknown enemy spells, etc.), allowing me to properly modify damage dealt or the like. One thing that Hero Lab lacks is an "overview" where I can view a summary of all the characters side-by-side. So I end up doing a little more flipping than I'd like, but all the information is otherwise readily available and neatly laid out for me. The integrated SRD material is again a real convenience, especially since it's hooked up in an intuitive way to each separate thing for the character. Supposedly, when I asked the dev team about the overview capability, they said that was slated for being added this summer, at which point I'll be quite happy.

Hero Lab doesn't have initiative tracking and other "DM tools" right now. That's no problem for me, but it could be a negative for others. We manage initiative with a visual board on the table, allowing all players to view it concurrently - and easily adjust things if an adjustment is necessary. So we don't need an initiative tracker that some people like. Same sort of thing applies for a few other in-game tasks that some people want to automate and our group handles openly.

So, for DMing, Hero Lab is very good, but not great. What it does, it does quite well. But it doesn't do everything some people will want it to do. For playing, Hero Lab is excellent. They don't have psionics yet, which hasn't been a problem in our group yet, but they supposedly will have psionics support this month. And I already mentioned the character sheets being sub-optimal. Beyond that, from a player's standpoint, I can think of things to add that would be nice to have, but there's nothing "missing".

One important thing to consider in a tool is how much non-SRD material you'll be using, since the complexity of adding custom material varies greatly between the various tools. We've added a number of classes, feats, skills, and items for the group where we all use Hero Lab, along with one race and a bunch of spells. The other group is purely SRD. There were some problems getting some of the custom material working in early releases, but recent versions of Hero Lab have not had any difficulties letting us add what we've wanted. In fact, the process keeps getting simpler with every update, and it's already pretty easy. In all but a couple instances, adding custom material was as simple as copying something similar, then modifying the few bits that are different. The exceptions required a bit more work, but they certainly weren't difficult. And both the developers and other users seem quite helpful on their support forums.

Definitely give Hero Lab a look. It's working well for our group, and you can do quite a lot with the demo version, so it's absolutely worth taking for a test drive.
