Looking for Rogue PrC's

sparhawk

First Post
I am playing a ghostwise halfling thief and I am looking for a good PrC to advance to. I only have the PHB and am new to 3E. I am a verteran AD&D player so I am not sure how to use the PrC's or what I should be looking for to better advance my charecter in thiefly roles but also to help in combat roles.
Thanks in advance for any help

Edited the title for clarity.

It would be a help if you could describe the character and where you see the character going.

I see PrC's as specializations of existing abilities at the cost of others.

Others see PrC's differently- so you are best off describing the character (stats, feats, personality, and all), and then a variety of suggestions can be made.

Ok. Here it goes as best as I can remember.

Stats
10 STR
17 DEX
12 CON
15 INT
10 WIS
12 CHR
I think this is correct.

4th lvl thief/1st lvl Barb.

equipment

short bow +1 keen
60 +1 arrows
+1 short sword (unique item)
+1 knife (throwing, returning) unique item.

I just got the bow and want to use it the most but I also want to be able to use my sneak attack as much as possible. I am a general dungeon thief not a city thief so city skills are not focused.

I want to be able to help the party out in a fight but if I can avoid Melee I will for preference to ranged attacks. Party is very fighter weak. I want to be good with the bow, I have point blank shot (feat) but not at the cost of loosing sneak attack or especially forgoing on any of my thief skills.

I hope this helps.

I only have the PHB so I have not been able to look up any of the PrC's at all. I am looking for what most people consider the best PrC for a rouge. I enjoy role Playing just as much as Hack and Slash so I do not want to go all killer instinct in this search. The group I play in has given me about 8 different PrC names but nobody has agreed on which is more fun to play or would fit best with the group. I do not play charecters that are leaders or that want to be leaders but are very much party oriented.

Well, if you don't mind being a leader, my personal favorite is the "Guild Thief" out of the FRCS.

If you take it at the right levels, you actually end up with an 11d6 sneak attack at level 20. Also, you get a large number of bonuses toward starting or improving your own guild.

It's a wonderful PrC for those who still believe that Rogue = Thief.

I recommend you do NOT take any Rogue PrCs that have no sneak attack progression. Sneak attack is one of the Rogue's best abilities, so why would you want to give it up? Especially in your case, Sparhawk, since you want to be useful in combat.

I'm not sure what you mean by not wanting to be a leader, but that may be a reference to the Guild Thief PrC. The Guild Thief does get bonuses to his Leadership score, but the Leadership feat in D&D isn't necessarily about leadership. You can use it to get a useful NPC henchman or creature of some kind. If you wanted something like a shadow panther like Guenhwyvar, or an awakened monkey with Rogue levels that's a great pick pocket, you would use the Leadership feat. There are many, many possibilities with that feat.

For you, though, I'd recommend the Nightsong Enforcer, if you can get a copy. It's from Dragon Magazine, and written by Monte Cook. You get full sneak attack progression and some very useful combat abilities, i.e., it's good for a combat rogue. Some of the combat abilities include Crippling Strike, lower armor check penalties, and Blindsight. In exchange for those abilities, you only get 4 skill points per level.

What is your character good at, and where do you want him to get good at? Although a more complete feat and skill listing would help here, I think it would be better if you just told us in words what you want the character to do.

What rogue abilities do you consider important? Why did you multiclass to Barbarian? What is your normal fighting style, and do you have any front line fighters?

The last question to ask is do you really need a PrC to achieve your character goals? Barbarian and Rogue work well together, in the end you might be better off not using a PrC.

Actually, I'd suggest not taking any PrCs for your rogue. Some of the later rogue class 'special abilities' are really really nice. Namely, Skill Mastery (esp. if your DM will let you use it with Use Magic Device) and Opportunist (really nice in concert with Combat Reflexes). Between 10th and 20th level you'll get 4 doses of 'special ability' and if none tickle your fancy you can use it to gain a free feat!
