Loot as you go, or no?

Do your characters loot as they go through the adventure, or do they save the searching for hidden goodies and the opening of chests for later? Why?

LOOT AS WE GO.

The universe contains enough one-way portals, and waterfalls, and structurally important villains, and the like, that you can't be assured you'll walk the same path twice.

Almost always "loot as you go". You never know when you're not going to make it back to a particular place. I mean, you might have to flee, or get teleported, or a passage might get sealed, etc....

The only time my PCs tend to leave loot is when it is big and heavy, and they have a reasonable expectation of returning; the wizard's lab full of glassware in the middle of the city.

Related question for DMs: do you allow groups to have a "group list" of what was found and permit divvying up later, or do you force dividing loot as it is found?

Three categories:

1) Players take group treasure that is used right away.

2) Group treasure that will be divided later or sold.

3) personal treasure acquired the rest of the group doesn't know about.
