What can be looted can be stole! Or lost. Or taxed. Or have have paperwork attached to it.
Players come out of the dungeon, dragging loads of loot, only to come face to face with an ambush.
The trip to the dungeon was no easy journey, why does the way home have to be? It takes twice as long because of that loot. Some will be lost some will be dumped.
What do you have to declare? What is in the wagon? Loot, you say? Well, sorry to tell you this but that dungeon is on King's land and that means it is his! I am sure you will get a reward for it; 10 coppers on the gold piece is the current rate. Oh, there is also a fine for trespessing, can't have adventures running around thinking they own everything, breaking things, tomb robbing.

We killed a dragon some time back and where distributing the stuff. Everybody could claim in order the thing he or she wanted in order we tossed for. I was the second to choose and it was for everybody prity clear what was good stuff or bad stuff.
First thing to go out was a belt of giant strength, then it was mine turn, I played a wizard so everybody expected that I would choose the staff. I did choose the corpse of the dragon. At the end of the session everybody was happy, we had big spoils but everybody felt sorry for me. We all agred to save time if we did the shoppings per mail to the GM.
The next session everybody wonderd why I had so much good stuff, about 3 times the total value of all stuff the group had together, and I was giving stuff away... 3 sessions later they heared a mage had slaughterd and sold every part of the dragon, from the eyes and guts till the dragon scales and hide. In total worth a small fortune....
Now the GM keeps a watchfull eye for everybody who chooses the corpse of an animal when we split the loot......

Make the players write every separate piece of equipment onto a piece of card, and file them in their character folder. 
When they wish to access a piece of equipment in game, they have to produce the correct piece of card from their folder. Switch to real time.

Again, my players did this too. With the first dragon (black) they fought.
Of course, one of the PCs is on his way to being a Dragon Disciple so I told him he was feeling very uncomfortable. I also made some comments about Vietnamese ear necklaces and openly questioning the heroics of the action.
On their way back from the dungeon they ran into a polymorphed gold in the form of a cat that stared and hissed at the guy who was wearing the body parts.
Finally, their boss is (they don't know it yet) a polymorphed brass, so when the guy showed up with a dragon-parts necklace he screamed at the guy and told him to get rid of it.

Players get all wonky when dragon corpses are involved.
Speaking of dragon parts, early on in my campaign, the players managed to kill a black dragon. They hauled the corpse up from the bottom of the swamp, and proceeded to take portions of it. One of the characters decides that he will eat the heart of the dragon. I pointed out to him that it would be horribly dishonorable, as he was playing a samurai, but he insisted that he would eat the heart. He was then miffed when I didn't give him any special powers for it claiming that every culture has stories based around eating dragon hearts and gaining power thereby. Players are weird. Maybe I shouldn't allow them in my games.

If my players know it is a dungeon crawl, they plan ahead, hiring a couple of guards, cart, and driver. Inside the cart, ropes, axes, shoves, crowbars, torches, and such. All the stuff they need to explore ruins.
As for off a major trade route? Not really but ruins of size always seem to have a trail or two leading to them. It may be overgrown but its there.
Note: Some of the items my players take to the dungeon are items they can use as barter with locals. Pots, knives, spear heads, cloth, etc.

You should have cursed him with Dragon Taint, his breath becomes foul, his skin scaly, his fingernails lengthen (this is leading him up to think he is becoming a dragon), and he changes skin tone a few shades closer to whatever color the dragon was...and that's all that ever happens....

At one point in Samurai history, they took the heads of their foes. Those fallen foe gave their heads for it was more hunorable to be killed by a greated warrior. when I say gave, they perfumed and styled their hair!
Honor is one of those 'everyone has a option' views.
