I have done some repair work on many books that I acquired used (and sometimes well beaten). This little website can show you how to do some repairs very effectively.

I've rebound one other stitched hardcover (a Rogue trader book) by removing all of the pages from the book, slicing the binding off with a hydraulic cutter, tape-binding the loose pages and then cementing the bound pages back inside of the cover. Seemed to work pretty well, though if you have any ideas, I'm open to suggestions
