Was there anymore stuff on him in the Planscape material. I don't have a lot of that material.

thanks

Mike

On him specifically, not a ton (of course compared to 1e it's as much or more). Largely there's some of his history and creation in the one Dragon mag article, and his being overthrown by Mydianchlarus across a book or two, and that he's currently wandering the lower planes attempting to offer his services to various evil deities in exchange for a bit of their divinity in making him a proxy of theirs. None of them seemed to be exactly jumping at the chance of so investing him with that level of their power.

The Planescape sources did however -massively- expand details on the interior of the Wasting Tower of Khin-Oin, its politics, flavor text about the position of Oinoloth itself, various legends and rumors about the whole place etc. There were various powerful Ultroloths that were named and detailed across numerous books, etc. 'Faces of Evil', 'Hellbound', and 'Planes of Conflict' had the most material.

The 'loths overall had less emphasis given to individual unique members of their race though compared to the Tanar'ri or Baatezu simply because they didn't tend to openly war amongst themselves in the same way or happen to be so severely fragmented amongst competing leaders all claiming superiority over the race as a whole, or layers of their home plane. Spread out over 3 planes rather than just solidly in one, plus with the Ultroloths hamstringing the power of anyone below their caste (with some exception in Gehenna and the Tower Arcane) they tended to be oddly unified in some ways even while the Ultroloths rampantly jousted for position and influence.

Probably the biggest limitation on their being as many individual unique 'loths is that the Ultroloths were all physically indistinguishable from one another by design, and that the creators of the 'loths were still there in the background pulling their strings and keeping them unified at least so far as racial goals went. Sort of a paradox: a race of utterly selfish and self interested sociopaths who cared nothing for one another in any way but who were effectively religious fanatics to the concept of abstract evil and who would sacrifice their own individuality if need be to ensure its long term success across the face of the multiverse.

And just what is wrong with a guy named Anthraxus?!
Or Bubonix...
Or Cholerix...
Or Typhus...
etc., etc.,
:p

Actually, I like the disease-based names of the Altraloths, gives them a sort of cuddly, oozing quality. ;)

what's wrong with those names? nothing at all. :)

they're no more silly than a lot of other fantasy character names. okay, maybe a little more silly, but not that much. ;)

I agree. Now, let's see an article on Diptherius (mentioned in the 1E MM2)!

I had fun killing most of them off with the exception of Cerlic and Taba. *grin*

Man... my PCs hated Taba by the end of that campaign.

Eh, maybe. They weren't active enough among the 'loths to warrent a mention in 2e when the 'loths came into their own, though there's other 'loths I'd personally enjoy writing an article on myself if I got something into Dragon.

What role did Diptherius have within Gygax's interpretation of the Diseased 8? (Which is pretty much confined to his post TSR Gord novels, and never came into use after 1e, the 'loths diverged from their 1e roots to the point of largely invalidating most of that ever since.)

I've always been really fascinated with Gygax's treatment of the fiends within his Gord books. He had a lot of great ideas in them (the Abat-Dolor, pretty damn cool, Vuron, the Diseased Eight, Infestix). It was too bad that none of them were really 'Core-ified.'
