Loremaster PrC "Secret Feat"

First Post
Call me crazy, but a number of players where I live, myself included, have this idea that they read somewhere that the Secret Feat from Loremaster is unrestricted. i.e. a loremaster who selects the secret feat can choose anything, even feats for which he/she does not meet the pre-reqs for.

Where did we get this crazy idea? Can anyone quote a source on this?

it's not actually a 'secret feat'. the Loremaster's Secrets are on list (DMG p35) and must be qualified for (level plus Int mod, compared to the list).

if the Loremaster's level + Int mod is 8 or higher, they can choose the 'Applicable Knowledge' secret, which gives the Loremaster "any one feat"

(although, as a DM, i would rule the the PC has to have the normal qualifications for the feat. they do use the word 'applicable'. so if the PC didn't qualify, it wouldn't apply to them)

[edit - the Epic Loremaster gains a bonus feat (from a list) as they go up in levels, and can choose to substitute one of these feats to a Loremaster Secret - but they can't choose the same Loremaster Secret more than once]

When you get to character level 1, 3, 6, etc, you get any one feat as well. You can never take a feat you don't qualify for unless the ability that gives it to you *expressly* tells you that you can. For example, a monk's deflect arrows expressly states they get it even if they don't qualify for it.

Although it does not use the specific terminology, I would treat this as a bonus feat. And you must qualify for any feat that you select as a bonus feat.

even if you could gain 'any' feat, even without the prereq's, why would you want to? I am pretty sure that you couldnt 'use' the feat without having the prereqs, much like a fighter with power attack who has been str drained down to 9. Happy hunting ;)

(now if only the class had the text, 'you can still use this feat even if you do not meet the prereqs'..hmm.. sounds like a fun prestige class for fighters.. pick up all of the high end feats!)
