Loss of a limb

First Post
I was wondering if there are any set rules on the negative effects of losing a limb in 3.5, aside from it sucking of course?

I cannot find any rules in the DMG or PHB.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

I don't think WotC has done any rules on specific injuries of any kind, but I don't know about other publishers.

Lost an eye, an ears, a leg and both arms? That's okay: if you've still got hit points left, you can still operate at full capacity as though you were completely unharmed.

Nothing in the RAW, but check out Torn Asunder by Bastion Press.

A nice critical hit system, but I find the real value is in the permanent injury effects.

Check the Book of Vile Darkness. There is a spell in there that whithers arms or legs and gives adjustment for the victim.

Well there are the obvious set rules such as the loss of both eyes causing blindness. Since you require at least one free hand to cast spells with a somatic component, someone who had his arms cut off wouldn't be able to cast such spells. You could arguably say the same for spells with material components since they must be manipulated in some fashion. Using your teeth or a foot to do that might not count.

I'd like to know for what reason are you asking this question? Are you a DM looking to perform some medically unneccessary amputations or a PC thinking of doing the same to some hapless NPCs? Either way, if you're thinking of performing such surgery during combat you'll be hardpressed to find rules to do so beyond things such as Torn Asunder since the combat system abstracts such effects such that they can only occur once the combatant is defeated or via DM fiat.

A PC or two in my game may be losing an arm very soon, as punishment for a crime committed (that is, if they don't hang first). I haven't decided how I'll deal with such a loss of limb in game mechanics.

But it's always nasty when a PC faces a permanently disfiguring injury. Sometimes it's better to say, "You're dead, roll up a new character" than to force them to love with the loss of an eye, arm, leg, etc.

Ironically enough, many PCs would survive the loss of a head better than an arm. They use their arms all the time to attack, but hardly ever have to use their head to survive. :]

They could just go find a cleric, you know. It'd hardly be permanent.

There are settings and campaigns where high level clerics are limited, and are not willing to just cast spells for others, even for money. Regenerate is a 7th level spell, so you need a 13th level cleric.

I'm about to use a module with a trap that may cost someone a hand in my game, and I'm deciding how to handle it given the fact that at this point the PCs, levels 7-10, have been all over the known world and have never met a cleric over 10th level. They know of one 10th level cleric, but no one else comes even close.
