D&D 5E Lost Mine - Wyvern Tor

So is the consensus that Wyvern Tor is a pretty tough encounter? I ask because my party took down a random encounter with about 5 or 6 orcs without breaking a sweat when they were 3rd level. Now that they're 4th level, adding in an ogre doesn't seem like it will even make it challenging for them.

I think it depends on how it gets setup. If the PCs leave themselves open to getting swarmed by six orcs (one of whom has twice as many hit points) and an ogre, it could indeed be very tough. If, however, they use the terrain to their advantage and find a way to prevent the orcs and ogre from ganging up on any of them, they should be fine.

My guess would be it's because there's only plot and musings and ideas - no actual encounters, maps, loot etc.

That makes sense. Thanks! :)

(snip) I have some fantasy art on my laptop that shows a small village clustered around a ruined tower. Got me thinking...

Old Owl Well is a fairly recent village, sprung up around the fortified (and abandoned) tower housing the well from which it takes its name. The villagers largely ignore the tower, believing it to be haunted. One day, a Red Wizard shows up with a force of zombies, ensorcels the hapless villagers for slave labour, and begins excavating the dungeons/tunnels/whatever beneath the tower. (snip)

I like this basic idea, and it's very much how I would run Old Owl Well. Also, in FR lore, it's a really ancient site that dates back beyond Netheril - when the well was built - to the serpent kingdoms of the sarrukh. I tend to think of it as Caverns of Thracia with an even strong serpentine flavour.

Has anyone significantly changed the encounter or added anything more far reaching? What about tying it into White Plume Mountain? I plopped Wyvern Tor and WPM side by side on the map, so connecting them somehow would make sense.

One thing that's on my mind at the moment is how the text gives distances (the cave entrance is 50 yards from where the PCs are first able to spot it, while the orc sentry is 20 yards closer), but it gives no real description of the ravine or the surrounding terrain. How steep are the ravine's sides? How wide is it? Is it rugged, rocky terrain, or is there foliage? How tall is Wyvern Tor? How far below the summit is the cave entrance? This sort of stuff would've been useful to know, especially when you've got players who like to use the terrain to their advantage.

I know what you mean.

And the first question: What is a "tor"? At least I addressed that in my blog post and, hopefully, the picture I posted of a real life tor will help a DM ad lib the answers to the questions you asked.

Got it figured out, now I know how i'm combining Old Owl Well and Wyvern Tor and Smoke Plume Mountain.

The PCs are heading out next time to take care of the orcs at WT and maybe Cragmaw Castle afterward. Before they reach the Tor they'll stumble onto Old Owl Well and the Red Wizard Kosk. Here's the adventure seed from White Plume. The wizard had obtained a book outlining the history of the mountain, the artifacts within, and the book was even bundled with several quiescent K-imprint scrolls. The wizard had "memorized" one, automatically imprinting him with a partial copy of Keraktis. He failed to decipher the other scrolls, but his forehead was emblazoned with a "K" tattoo and he has a burning desire to acquire more power from the mountain, but the orcs of Wyvern Tor have been a deterrent. The wizard is doomed, he's been a host to the spell for over a month and will soon slide into madness. Kosk now thinks he is "Keraktis", and that won't mean much to the PCs at first until they read and comprehend the history book. They'll be tempted I'm sure to learn or cast a new spell from the scroll, at which point at least one of them will be hooked.

Furthermore, the beholder under the mountain in the Seven Pillar Hall, and subsequently under Wave Echo Cave as well, has knowledge of the artifacts Wave, Whelm and Blackrazor and wants them for himself.

Maybe there's a way to tie the Black Spider to this as well, even though he's dead now and reanimated as a zombie under the beholder mage's control.
