D&D 5E Lost wagon of Phandelver

I played through it twice with different people.
In the one group we took the wagon to town because it gad valuables. Then doubled back to check out the cave.
In the second group we hid the wagon.
In both cases the dm just made it simple so as to not have the adventure bogged down by what was a plot device to get us together.

But yeah my instinct really is to get the wagon to town first.

I guess another option is to have 4 more people on the wagon and they say they'll take the wagon on to town since it's not much further while the pcs go and check and make sure the patrons are still alive ( after realizing that the dead horse is that of the patron)...

Its a perfect opportunity for some Foreshadowing and versimulDMitude - which is a sign of a good GM :p

The PCs come back out after defeating the goblins and find their Oxen have been eaten, the cart wrecked and contents scattered. They also see a dragon flying away off in the distance. Now the PCs have some motivation when they eventually go to the ruined town and encounter the dragon.

Yes.

The wagon that's actually causing a little trouble is the one that originally held the supplies that are stored away in Cragmaw Hideout. My players currently believe that the goblins took it to Cragmaw Castle, and that following the wagon there will be easy. I have a suprise for them, but in the meantime, it makes me wonder what was supposedly done with that wagon.

Probably chopped up for firewood or lumber. I doubt a bunch of goblins will be spending enough time travelling on roads to warrant keeping a wagon.

Seems like a good goblin SOP would be to shoot the oxen first.

Only if you want to hand carry everything in that wagon and also butcher the oxen in the road. Much easier to drive the oxen and their wagon to your hideout and then get to the looting and butchering.

THANKS Guys!

Well, at last I've decided to put a driver, with some fighting skills, on wagon so it could hide and take care of oxen and party is not worried to leave it alone.

But, i think to put some amerigoV idea when they will come back

Grazie!

My group hid the horses and wagon via a Survival check; they spent a grand total of about 4 hours dealing with the goblins, so I rolled once to see if any wandering monsters had come along and caused a ruckus. The dice were kind to the PCs, and the wagon was undisturbed.
