LotR characters

This has probably been covered many a time, but how would you make the 3 main LotR characters (Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli) in D&D 3e?

With core classes -

Legolas - Fighter/Ranger

Aragorn - Paladin/Ranger

Gimli - Fighter

Obviously some things won't fit exactly, which is understandable since Tolkien wasn't trying to make LOTR 3e-compatible :)

Here's my take:

Aragorn: Ranger 18/Paladin 10
Legolas: Ranger 10/Fighter 10
Gimli: Fighter 20
Boromir: Fighter 20
Gandalf: Wizard 25 (1/2 Celestial Template)
Frodo: Commoner 1/Fighter 9
Sam: Commoner 1/Bard 5
Merry: Commoner 1/Paladin 4
Pippin: Commoner 1/Paladin 4

These seem reallllllly high. I mean Gandalf's cool and all, and I get the 1/2 celestial thing, but 25th level? It's not like we saw him chucking Meteor Swarms or stopping time. I think a case could be made for Gandalf being below 10th level!

How do you figure Paladin levels into Aragorn, Merry and Pippin? Did they turn undead and lay on hands when I wasn't looking? Other than the fact that they are lawful good, I just can't see them as anything other than straight fighters or rogues, with the exception of Aragorn who seems to be a Ranger/Fighter.

I'd cut these guys' levels in half. A party of 20th level guys would have wiped the floor with the orcs at Helm's Deep, army not needed, thank you.

I would think Aragorn would have some levels of Paladin or Cleric... How else would he control the undead from The Paths of The Dead? And there were lots of undead, so possibly he would be Paladin15/Fighter5.....

Here's my honest take on the characters...

Aragorn: Fighter 8/Ranger 8
Legolas: Fighter 10 (Emphasis on archery feats)
Gimli: Fighter 10 (Emphasis on melee feats)
Gandalf the Grey: Wizard 15 (Half-celestial template)
Gandalf the White: Wizard 17+ (Half-celestial template)
Boromir: Fighter 8

I didn't include the hobbits, since I feel that they would mostly be low-level commoners (Pippen and Sam) and aristocrats (Frodo and Merry both come from wealthy families). Pippen and Merry might have a couple of fighter levels, working for Gondor and Rohan like they did.
