LotR RPG? Anyone getting this?

Well, I ran MERP for years, and only because it was Middle Earth...the system was painful to play, even after 2e came out for it. I am a huge fan of the 3rd age, but a Silmarillion book would be a very welcome addition to that line-up ;)

Though I love the d20 system, I believe that its user-friendly rules have set the bar for other new games coming out; maybe LotR RPG will be just as good of a system (plus WotC could always use some competition...lol).

I too am looking forward to how they handle magic, the Elves, and basically everything else in the game. I just need a 500k/year job with all the gaming stuff coming out. Between D&D3e, Warhammer, LotR, and White-Wolf, Im constantly broke. Ugh.

Whoever said gaming was easy was wrong. LOL.

Yeesh! I passed it up too -- as a Tolkien fan who plays RPGs and has disposable income. Who is buying it?

No-one who's ever played an RPG should buy the Adventure Game. It's expressly designed as an *intro* to role-playing. It's sold really, really well at 30 bucks and made us a nice chuck of change. We could have lowered the price, made less money, and screwed ourselves *cough*PHB*cough*

Who's buying it? Parents who's kids have just seen the movie and want to play a LOTR game.

Perhaps I should clarify, since I can see why you'd feel attacked. I wasn't expressing anger, just surprise. I'm happy for you that it's selling well at $30, but I would consider myself exactly the kind of guy who'd pick up such a product (even though I don't "need" it, as an experienced gamer), and the price clearly seemed to steep to me.

I'm glad they're buying it. I don't know if I could've convinced my folks, but, again, I'm glad parents are buying it.

With all due respect, it was Wizards' other products (i.e., Pokemon) that contributed low sale and the company's loss of revenue.

(I keep telling everyone, Pokemon is out. Yu-Gi-Oh is in.)

Unless you hear something different.

Oh, by the way, I will be buying the new Lord of the Rings game as well. I'm curious about a number of things--like how they're going to portray magic and the various Elven races. I am still a bit disappointed about the (relatively) limited scope of the game: strictly Third Age, only covering the events portrayed in The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. So no First or Second Age goodness for me...sniff sniff. (Unless, of course, the fine folks at Decipher are going to pull something out of their sleeve regarding this time period.)

I'm am not sure, but maybe them, as Games Workshop for its minis game, has only the rights to the Lord of the Rings, not the other books from Tolkien.

(GW specifically doesn't have the right over any other Tolkien work, in their game they can only use LotR stuff)

I'm not sure if you're aware of the point I was making. I was alluding to the notion that, had the PHB been $10 more, it would probably have sold just as many copies and made Wizards about 10 million dollars more. It was certainly worth $30.

Yeah, Hildebrandt brothers aren't bad, but contributed... actually, I'm not sure they're even featured in MERP. Angus MacBride is, a little, although mostly all he did was the covers. Liz Danforth did most of the illustrations and I don't like her work at all.

Oh, well, that I agree with you. Sorry for missing that.
