Actually, comparing D&D to the rest of the fantasy genre, it almost seems that it's D&D that is against the grain. I've only read a few tales (both new and old) where magic is anywhere nearly as prevelant as the Core Rules establish, and most of these have been (at best) comedic in style (and those that weren't were generally poorly written to begin with).
